Which Saltwater Floating Fly Pattern

Starvinmarvin

Recommended Posts

Had a wonderful session down on the south coast this past Sunday, sadly no takes, but loads of mullet and bass within range, but surface feeding. Can anybody suggest a couple of good floating patterns that I could try. Have checked out most of the Saltwater sites and they nearly all suggest poppers, have already tried this.

Thanks in advance

For what its worth I remember Mike Ladle's advice about mullet flies. Since the mullet are often feeding on some type of seaweed maggot, something white and maggot-like might work. Perhaps tying an oversize white buzzer might do the trick.

A bit early in the year for mullet to be feeding on seaweed maggot.

Wait until the tide is picking up rotten seaweed from the beach infested by maggot before bothering with that one.

Mullet will often skim the surface for the film of detrius, especially in calm conditions.

All those mouths, wandering around sucking at something on the surface, is torment for a fly angler, but you have to realise that they are preoccupied feeding on the surface scum, and will drive you mad with frustration!

Thanks for the links, and yes they were driving us mad, so many fish and none of them taking. Found a couple of other patterns on one of the links will give them a try this weekend.
