How low can you go?

I must check out the Hart. I do agree that a fine piece of engineering adds to the aesthetics of the whole thing. Trouble is, all my best reels have been magnets for bad fortune or theives: having desired the damned things so much their passing makes me wonder - is it worth it?

 

Ironically, the first modern fly reel I ever bought was a Dragonfly 60. Good then, still going strong, still in constant use.

Well I had all the guides whipped on but was leaving the reel seat till last as I can't decide on whether to add the small fighting butt for my lad; have now decided not to, but of course the cork handle won't go on... doh. So it's off with the Guides and on with the handle. Hope to have time over the next few nights to get stuck in.

 

Desperate to get started on my 8 wt, thinking of a 9 or 10 weight for Pike fishing next, but waiting to see how the blank performs first.

 

Really enjoying it though, just struggling with finding the time.

Glad to hear your enjoying it. I've finished the 3 wt, it gets its first outing at the float tube meet on Sunday

I have dry cast it on the lawn and it is sweet!

Had a real problem reaming out the bamboo burl cork handle, it seemed to have a hard lining to the centre hole, to the point where it destroyed my reamer

If you get around to the pike rod, Bob at Hook and Hackle has some tremendous forecast blanks at a really good price. I've built a 9 wt for pike, and it is a real cannon.

Hi Y'all Im new to this forum but it loks like ive found some likeminded folk. Ive never got on well with heavy takle, prefering to spend the last few years using a 8ft 5weight for all my trouting. Having recently discovered how cheap it is to build your own rod ive been dabbling, I built a 6,6" 2weight which is now my main rod. This is well suited to the tiny chalkstream I usually fish but it gets used for all other occasions as well. I matched it up with a mill end 3wt floater which turned out to be an excellent line and a tiny little black eagle reel from the states.

Untill now I thought I was mad using such light equipment and couldnt understand why "normall" sized rods felt like telegraph poles

Hi Trouter, welcome to the forum

I'm interested in your 6'6" 2wt. I was planning on one of them for my next build. What blank did you use?

I do almost all my fishing now with an 8'3" 3wt on a DanCraft blank. Would find it very hard to go back to a heavier rod.

I do a lot of fishing from a float tube these days and the small rod is perfect as long casts aren't necessary.

Hi Dave

 

I built on a 4 piece Batson Rainshadow RX6. Its a very thin, light rod and the action is very soft which is perfect for short casts. Ive not had any big fish on it yet but a 3/4 lb grayling is fantastic sport. It cost me $24 which cant be bad. However I also built on a 8.6" 5 weight from the same range which turned out to be quite a bulky rod.
