Petition to keep the close season on rivers

Other than the Environment Agency, do many commercial concerns stock fish in rivers?

Don't know, but dose it make a difference? I fish plenty of farms which are commercial concerns and have spent time/money on access and parking, don't think all still waters have done that.

It seems to me that there are quite a few people who look upon fishing through rose tinted spectacles.

These people like to have a break in their fishing routine (giving them a feel good factor) and look forward to the buzz of the opening day of the new season. It appears that they think supporting the closed season gives them a moral high ground. Yet some of these 'romantics' are hypocrites as they still fish the still waters for Tench etc during the old closed season and still fish rivers catching the game fish during their spawning/closed season.

If they feel so strongly about the rivers closed season why are they fishing at all during the old closed season?

Yes, it's a fair point, and I am one of those people. Like I said before, for me it's just not the same unless it applies to everyone. But I suppose I am just trying to justify it.

To be fair, I do try to avoid catching trout on coarse gear, but in rivers where they're plentiful, it's next to impossible.

I would prefer there to be a blanket closed season like there used to be, but in the current situation I will fish Wingham and fly fish for trout until 16 June. With Wingham, it's purely selfish reasons I'm afraid - the tench and bream are at their heaviest.

So, yes, I am a hypocrite! And I will always strive to view angling through my rose-tinted glasses :)

The buzz of the 16th has gone now, though. I have friends who have a stronger resolve than me, and I am increasingly jealous of their mounting fever as the magical date approaches.

Surely even the anti-closed season anglers must miss the magic of the 16th of June? In years gone by I couldn't even read those words without a tingle going down my spine. It was like a thousand Christmases.

This is one annual debate which really does divide opinion, and I find every year my own opinion changes slightly. But it's good to see it being debated in good nature, even though we all seem to feel strongly one way or the other.

[ If your argument is that everyone needs to give the fish a rest then EVERYONE should give ALL the fish a rest.

Well said. :clap2: Nothing to do with science. just respect. Give it all a rest for the spring whatever.

Other sportsmen have to endure close seasons, A lot longer than ours use to be.

I disagree. It should be everything to do with science and rationality. What other things do you believe in for no good reason? Don't get me wrong everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but if you want me to believe what you believe then you'll have to give me some rational argument as to why I should. Trouble is we'll all most probably change our minds to suite ourselves. I think we all have our own interest at heart it's human nature and our minds twist things to make us happy. :D

and vice versa...
Absolutely, but to accept the idea that we need a closed season I want to see some scientific research to show how it is of benefit. The fact that it gives some folks a nice squishy feeling is not a rational argument.

On a personal note, I don't give a toss, if there is scientific evidence to support the closed season or not.

I like the 'feeling' of a new season, looking for old swims, and finding new ones. The overgrown vegetation, 'hiding' the river, and making your way through it without a sign of other anglers being there before you.

To me, angling isn't about science, or just catching fish, it's about ejoyable experiences on the bank.

The first day of a new season, with it's freshness and air of expectation, is just about as enjoyable as it gets.

Sounds almost like a substitute for religion John ;)

Utterly pointless unless enforced properly (which it isn't) by the EA

I'd love to get that feeling of exploring new swims where anglers haven't been before on June the 16th but I'm afraid all I'll see is beer cans, litter, eastern european lure and trace packets and scotch marks on th ground from jolly bankside BBQs
