While driving up the peninsula today in bright sunshine i notice what looks like a rainbow, full circle round the sun. Thats odd i think but after about 50Ks its still there so i pulled off the road and took a few pics.

 

Now there is a thin very high cloud base but the sun is clear and shining brighly.

 

The rainbow for want off a better word is so big i can only get small portions of it in the pic.

 

The first picture i have ran the photoshop curves and darkened it a bit and the second pic i ran through levels.

 

I figure there must be a name for this phenomonem but for the life of me i dont know what it is or what makes it happen.

No mate Ken's spot on. You can only see the corona during a total or very near total solar eclipse.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.
