I'm happy to use shelf life, they are convenient and seem to work fine for me.

Don't think I would be over popular if I loaded the freezer with bait, but i can keep as much boilies as I like in the shed with no comments.

Stephen

fantasticfisherman:

what do you think? i've spoken to people who omly seem to be catching on frozen boilies due to them being fresh when they come out of the freezer, and we all know that shelf - lives harden as they are left open, so what do you think?

I've been using Rod Hutchinson shelf life boilies and struggling like hell to even get a run.

Went to Manor Farm a couple of weeks back and had 12 fish and missed numerous runs all on "fresh/frozen" boilies. Didn't use any shelf life ones so maybe not fair to compare but my mate did and struggled for a touch (from next peg, 15 mtrs away) until he pinched a few of my baits and swithched to using "fresh". Three low doubles followed and he went home very happy with a new PB under his belt.

Conclusion:- Fresh/Frozen baits for me from now on, gotta loada RH 20mm for sale if anyone wants to make sensible offers:-

approx 4.5kgs Monster Crab, 2kgs Scopex and 3kgs Mullberry

One good reason to do something is better than a thousand bad excuses not to.

If you have the inclination guys make your own, believe me you don't need major science, biology & chemistry qualifications!

Bit of common sense coupled with experimentation & trust me in no time you'll have a bait thats a third of the price & twice the quality at least.

Think about it, you're not putting a bait together for profit, but purely for results, what bait company is going to look at it that way.

There's a bit of work involved yes, but from that comes a sense of accomplishment that seriously adds to the capture.

Not everybody's cup of tea, but once you begin to doubt the readymades this becomes a good opportunity to radically improve your results.

No problem F/F they would freeze as per normal.

Ingredients can make a difference but not to any great extent.

First purchase, frozen readymades or homemades, should be a top quality freezer bag with the ability to put freezer packs in them. Providing you don't leave the bag open when fishing you'll be shocked how long they'll stay frozen, 48 hrs isn't a problem. Providing they haven't fully defrosted I've re-froze boilies without any obvious problems, but use your loaf with this high level fishmeal & crustacean baits will not stand re-freezing to the same level as other baits.

Of course, long stay anglers will find a problem with that unless they have access to a freezer locally. But there's nothing stopping you air drying homemade boilies.

Freezer baits are generally better quality than ready mades, but both will undoubtedly catch fish. I use both but prefer frozens whenever possible. Frozen baits will last pretty much forever in the freezer (well many months or even a year anyway). Once out of the freezer some will mould up but 3 or 4 days is generally OK, just don't let them sweat in a closed plastic bag. I used frozen baits for a whole week in France in May this year, just left them out in an old pillow case to keep them dry. They caught from day 1 to day 7 equally well.
