Marmite

Recommended Posts

For countless years I have enjoyed Marmite on toast with my breakfast boiled egg.

I still do, although now I cut my own soldiers instead of having grandma do it for me :)

Over the last two years, I have noticed Marmite has become paler in colour. It used to be almost black - now it is dark brown.

It has also become "stickier" ie it used to have the texture of cold butter, but now it is the consistency of treacle, amd leaves a long messy "tail" between knife and jar.

I have also noticed it does not seem to taste as strong as in the past.

Before I write to Unilver, demanding an explanation, the firing of their Marmite formulation manager and the formal castration of their directors, I would like some other opininions from those who have enjoyed this product for many years. Is it my imagination, or is it less "strong" than in the past?

Marmite used to have a slogan "Too much spoils the flavour"

That has disappeared, possibly because some accountant feared it would reduce consumption, or maybe they are diluting the product so that you now have to use more (at the same price)

Gimme some ammunition please!

probably because its "british" the EU want to water it down to spite us ,no garden chemicals work because the EU dont want the british to grow anything ,the formula of jeyes fluid changed so the british can no longer get rid of moss .

everything is down to europe wishing to destroy the brits in any way possible! helped by the labour party who also undermine us.marmite is just the bits you notice ,hovis is just slightly brown nowadays and lacks the hovis taste! no doupt its been de hovisted by the EU

i tried vegemite ,blurp sweet tasting crap only fit for oz.

perhaps the sqeezable versions formular has been found to be cheaper to produce so is now the standard formula ,coumpanies dont have the traditions of old they just want money ,is the formula the same as the 1906 version???

has bovril changed ,i love the version from some shops that come in sheaths of 10 vending type cups (look at the ingredients its mostly salt!) so i bought a jar of it ,yuk!!! i prefer the cups so i'm no use i prefer real marmite but not vegemite but fake bovril over real bovril DOH

Bovril went to a vegetarian yeast extract formulation for a while, which was just wrong - If I'd wanted Marmite, I'd have bought Marmite! It's now gone back to being boiled down cow. The boiled cow formula is more syrupy, the yeast one is more paste-like.

Unconventional, I prefer it on toast

High in B-vitamins, also high in free amino acids (it's basically hydrolysed protein), so lots of umami to tempt any predatory animal. On the other hand, I hear that cats like earwax :yucky:

It doesn't have to be marmite. Try holding a plain Boots vitamin B tablet in a clenched fist and offer your hand to a cat or a dog.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

So they do! Well, that's interesting, perhaps someone needs to measure the vitamin B levels in earwax, we could be onto a public health breakthrough :D

(the cat is now objecting that she didn't get to eat it)

Told ya so. You can safely give her half of one Steve, it's good for them. I used to have a German Shepherd and I used the vitamin B tablets, cut into thin slithers as rewards and bribes. The only danger is that any more than half a day will give your cat extremely foul smelling wind. A big dog like a GSD can manage maybe two before it gets too musical.

My sisters' cat used to go nuts if you just showed him the bottle.

Oh no, Cory will have the whole of the AN team dropping vitamin B tablets into swimfeeders before you know it.

Just remember to put the lid back on the jar or you'll be waist deep in mink and otters.

I was just wondering how you could use them for bait. Maybe a hair rig? Any ideas anyone?

I have tried it in paste before. And also glugged boilys in it with a little oil. As far as eating it goes i bought the tesco own brand just to see what it was like and it seems to be more like the old stuff. And a lot cheaper, Worth a look.

Used it quite often to soak chunks of luncheon meat in for Barbel. Was a killer for a couple of seasons :)
