repainting a reel

Recommended Posts

I have an old Mitchell 754) reel that I love to bits.

Unfortunately the paintwork was a repaint by the original owner, and is now flaking and looking naff.

I want to sand down the chassis and repaint it.

The original was probably powder baked for maximum toughness. Can anyone recommend any paint I might use that will make a decent job of it?

Cheers,

Arf

Just about the toughest paint would be smooth Hammerite. However why not get it re powder coated. It isn't that expensive, and you'll never do as good a job with paint as they will.

Cheers OT.

What manner of companies do you think may offer a re-powdercoating service. or do you mean Mitchell themselves?

just look for a plating company most will do powder coating ,all chrome maybe nice though i had a pair of chrome 410's in the 70's

mitchell themselves probably didnt know they made reels out of metal in the past.

i expect it or some of it was anodised rather than painted

Oh wow, chrome plated would be awesome!!!

I shall forage around and see what options my locale burps up.

Morning Arf, I don't want to depress you but,

If you do go the powder coating route don't forget to completely strip the reel and mask off any components or areas that you don't want the finish on. Once on it is bloody difficult to get off. Don't take it to a commercial plastic coater or somebody who powder coats commercial racking etc. nothing will fit again! You need to take it to a specialist coater who is used to working with aluminium based materials.

My guess is that originally they would not have been powder coated but wet painted onto an etch primer. Aluminium is a pig to powder coat and requires numerous (as many as 10) cleaning processes including nitric acid, alkaline, and de-ionised water dips prior to heat drying.

If the reel had been powder coated properly it would probably still be there. If you are after a durable gloss finish in a basic colour I would go with OT's Smooth Hammerite suggestion but use a compatible (Hammerite) special metals primer first.

A handy tip for cleaning the reel first is after stripping (nitromors should do the job quickly) soak the reel in biological washing powder solution at about 37 degrees for an hour or two, rinse several times and then scuff up the surface with some clean wire wool.

It might sound like a lot of work but it is! Neither will it be a cheap job. But you will end up with a paint job that should stay on at least as long as the original and probably longer, and certainly longer than the re-paint.

As Chester's suggested, anodising would give the best finish and would last forever but pricy to! Cheaper options here are some of the model maker's metal blacking products for a variety of materials http://www.chronos.ltd.uk/acatalog/Chronos...oducts_255.html.

Chrome plating on ali is also fraught with problems, and expensive! Don't forget, you are adding metal and the reel will have to be polished by hand. Don't expect everything to fit perfectly afterwards :(

Probably be cheaper to get another reel in better nick off ebay! B)

Good luck
