I agree with peter when he says that the use of 3 1/2 tc rods are all that the carp fisherman seem to use these days.I was sneered at when i took out my trusty fox barbel rods that i use for most of my carp fishing as they were only 1 1/2 tc?!!!! **** wat are we catching here carp or conger?

I do sea and freshwater fishing and enjoy both, but freshwater remains my fondest sport. But here is the thing that bugs me most is that carp fishermen now forget the simple skills of watercraft and rely solely on a bait and it's application. There is skill to this but not much!!

Where is the watercraft in piling in bait and waiting for the runs.

I prefer stalking to baiting,BUT will use both as in boiled baits and naturals as i would be a fool not to.Much of my fishing is surface fishing but on some waters i am laughed at and ridiculed for using my skills and techniques to outwit carp, because i fish on the surface?! i've actually been told this is cheating!! that lost me.

I think in all sports theres is always a minority who can ruin it for others, and this i think is what peter writes about so strongly.I agree in part but think that if more of us went back to the rivers and fished away from the lakes we would get away from the few that ruin a days sport.

Too many lakes are made for these minority who come to fish to catch without thought or skill.

Nice to see others have noticed this, even Den who in the past doesnt seem to have However enough of the finger pointing it does exist in several other branchs as well.Although I risk incuring wrath a lot of times this is due to people who have only fished for carp moving into them! How do we stop it? It certainly is an unatractive side of specialist angling.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Hand on heart, I've seen very, very little of the prats and their antics as described in this thread.

Perhaps the fact that I'm a big ol' boy discourages moronic ****-takery, I don't know. Maybe my venue-selection has kept me from the awful truth to which others have been exposed, but again I'm at a loss to explain it.

The fact is, the vast majority of carp anglers I know are bloody decent blokes. Attitudes, abilities, values, standards and priorities all vary tremendously, but that's true of any collection of people, anywhere.

No, chaps, I think I'm out of this one due to pure lack of subject-knowledge and I think that's how I'd prefer to remain, thanks.

And on the eighth day God created carp fishing...and he saw that it was pukka.

Anybody know where you can buy rose-tinted Polaroid glasses? :)

English as tuppence, changing yet changeless as canal water, nestling in green nowhere, armoured and effete, bold flag-bearer, lotus-fed Miss Havishambling, opsimath and eremite, feudal, still reactionary, Rawlinson End.

I used to fish two rivers for carp and it was very productive for a while. I used to be able to catch at least one carp on most trips to the lower or tidal Trent a few years ago, but they now seem to be an endangered species. I haven't even seen one for years now.

Another place where I did very well was on the North Bank of the River Nene. Sadly, you would have to be very stupid or very brave indeed to fish there these days. You are only feet away from the road down there and the road is used by some of the most reckless drivers in the country. On top of that, it is near Peterborough, where anything that doesn't move is likely to be torched by arsonists within minutes - not really in the spirit of Crabtree.

I tried several sessions on the Welland, but the bank to bank weed was cut just a little too late in the season. I did get a close up view of a marsh harrier though, so that was some kind of consolation. At least there is the satisfaction of seeing the locals look at you as if you are stark raving mad, which is very comforting; it's just like it used to be in the Seventies.

Peter my brother still fishes the river trent i think,i'd have to check with him on that but i'm pretty sure he caught a couple of very nice carp from there to.

Have you fished medway? a number of clubs have diffrent stretches of the medway but there are only a few places that seem to produce some very big carp.I know of of some sreious carp anglers who fish the medway and do some serious baiting campaigns to hold them in one area so they have a chance of catching them. It's all very secretive but goes on a lot and there results are very good.

But it does take time and patience.

Does anyone fish the canals at all,i'm very interested in fishing either a river or canal next summer,my family live in kent and my brother could be persauded to bait up for me before i come up from devon.

Peter any idea's,or could you let me know how you went about catching these carp out of the rivers, cheers.

Peter Sharpe:

...or how to clean bile-tinted ones?

No tint of rose affecting my carpy view, Peter. I'm just calling it as I see it - through 20/20 vision.

I've only been carp fishing 'seriously' for 6 years and during that time I have never, not even once, had any other carper do anything notably out of order to affect my fishing or the enjoyment of it.

Maybe I'm just lucky, eh.
