Hook Size -- importance!?

Recommended Posts

When i first set up my carp rig i used a size 10 ESP hook with 2 10mm boilies. I have now upped to using one 15mm boilie and i have found i am getting a few missed bites or loosing a few takes.....is it my hook size?

I have watched a few vids and they seem to all use 8 or even 6 with long shank. They really seem to pump the long shank hooks...what do you guys recon?

I have also been experimenting with some size 6 long shank hooks and it doesnt seem to be putting the fish of taking the bait yet i havent lost one yet!

Question therefore is....which hook do you use, why and how......any advice on hooks and hook size!

Chris

This could be due to your bait being too far or too close from the bend of the hook, so it makes it difficult to take the bait in, or it sucks it in and can regect it before the hook has time to knock itself in.

I used, Owner eyed hooks, never had a problem with them, several other makes of hook, Nash Korda, and even some kamazan hooks, have opened up on me or snapped.

So i now use owner eyed for everything or, if i cam looking for a long shank hook, i would put everything into Ashima D900 or something like that, another foreign make, of hook, but a bl00dy good one, bl00dy gd! :)

Its all about experimenting until you get it right.

I try to match hook size with bait size.

I use ESP Raptor G4 hooks :

Raptor G-4 carp hooks are the perfect pattern for bottom baits and particles.

This barbless version has a corrosion resistant pearl black finish.

The super sharp long needle point improves penetration and ease of hook removal.

All the G4 range have a 10 degree down turned

eye.

10 hooks per pack.

These are perfect for me as most of my carping is with bottom or critically balanced bottom baits.

I also use Drennan super specialist barbless which are basically the same hook but without the 10 deg down turned eye or black finish.

I use these with flurocarbon stiff rigs, when floater fishing or stalking the margins with soft baits such as paste or meat where I dont use a hair rig.

At the end of the day its personal choice.

I use the above because they have worked for me.

RUDD

Different floats for different folks!

I'm maybe going off on a tangent, but me & Daz were talking to a geezer on Sat who said he'd bought a packet of Kamasan carp hooks & after losing a fish he noticed the gape on the hook had opened out.

I only mention it because it reminded me the one time I had a hook straighten it was a kamasan, so now I use anything but them.

BTW Daz, was I right in thinking the same guy said he had a hook that went blunt (or was it rusty) so he sharpened it up & is still using it to this day. The point being - What's the point??? Surely you'd just discard it & put a new one on???

Just to let you know, i went for 24h at my local water last night. Used ESP size8 hooks and made contact with all 3 alarm runs. 2 were bream but the point is i still hooked them, and one was defo a carp which i played for 5 mins then got caught up in a snag and i did lose it but i dont blame the hook on that one, so yea...happyer with my size 8s now!
