Please dont take this the wrong way but the best way is to buy/borrow some books and read as much as you can then try what you have read! Have a go

Monkey Boy, what Ian says is quite true. Another route is to go with more experienced anglers, especially where pike are concerned. Take a look at http://www.pacgb.com re pike. There are probably similar sites for carp. Pike to not respond well to bad handling, often unintentional I hasten to add, but newcomers to piking often don't know any better until shown in a practical situation.
