Setting up for float fishing

Hi Guys. I'm looking for some really technical info here. Is there a table anywhere that tells me the weights of split shot and how accurate are they (and floats) manufactured. I've only been out a few times with my son and Grandson who are also novice anglers (all licenced) but when I'm setting up the tackle it is very much a guessing game. Example: a 3BB waggler on my local pond. I used 2 x BB to secure the float then 4 x No4 in shirt button fashion to the hook and yet the float was still high in the water. I bought 2 starter books one of which is an encyclopedia but no table. Short of contacting the likes of Drennan, Any advice on this please

i wouldnt worry about what it says on the side of the float, as long as you put enough shot on until the float sits in the water so just the tip is showing it should do its job

the more of the float out the water the more resistance that is felt by the fish so its sometimes better to over shot the float if you can get away with it

Use what it says on the float as a guide, but they're never exactly right. In any case, some days you want the tip very low for tiny bites from shy fish, and other days you want it much higher if it's choppy or if you want to ignore little dips, etc.

The way I remember it, a bigger shot weighs the same as two shot of the next smaller size, i.e.:

1SSG = 2 AAA

1 AAA = 2 BB

1 BB = 2 No.1

1 No.1 = 2 No.4

1 No.4 = 2 No.6

1 No.6 = 2 No.8

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

Thanks Guys

The link you gave John is exactly what I was looking for and will serve me well. I also appreciate the tips you gave. I'm keeping a small notebook with these in for future reference.

Once again chaps, thanks a million
