It's always very difficult to ad-lib or improvise on another rig when you're not exactly sure of the reasons for the original design. Of course with time and experience one can ascertain which are the essential ingredients and which parts are fairly irrelevant, but I'm far from that level of experience at the moment.

For me (and you will probably get different answers off everyone here) a couple of the must important things about his hook rig are,

1. The sort 3" hook length that cant reach to tangle around the main line when trying to hit a long cast and gives anything picking up the bait little room or time to work out what its picked up is before it gets hooked.

2. The way he has his fake maggots looped around the back of the hook means even a smallish hook is free to work to it full potential unmasked by the rubber maggots.

This is important as it quite difficult to achieve this in other ways! I've lost/missed fish becuse of the maggots turning over and getting in the way of the hook point.

He says that despite being a Drennan consultant, they're totally over-rated and a complete waste of money, and that you're better off getting some cheap second hand barbel rods from the BFW site B)

Hahahahaha, I have the splintered remnants of the rod to prove that is a BAD idea!

Ah, but did you marker pen out the rods 'Barbel' transfer and crayon on 'Tench & Bream' instead? If you're going to cut corners you only have yourself to blame!

One way round this one Angly, might be to use a braid hook length. I use it most of the time for barbel fishing in 12lb on 2lb tc rods and my local river can be a bit of snag pit with plenty of fish into double figures. So Ive given it a good testing at times and its also much thinner for small hooks.
