Wingham Fish-In

In fact if you can help with a bedchair or camping/cooking gear please let me know as this year we've 3 guests who've done little overnight fishing.

I will be bringing a spare bivvy (old but serviceable) and bedchair plus I can probably rustle up a gas stove and set of billies if anyone needs them (but don't forget your own utensils such as mug, cutlery, etc.). If you are joining in the BBQ then you will probably not need a main meal (unless your name is Elton  ) so all you need to plan for are drinks, breakfast and evening snacks. Even though it's May you will also need a sleeping bag as the nights can be chilly.

Regarding tactics, I would agree with Budgie's comments earlier. However, there are other species in Wingham such as the perch, roach and rudd all of which grow to very respectable sizes and you can have great sport with normal float and leger tactics but do bear in mind you may connect with a tench and so it would be wise to ensure your tackle is a little more substantial than you would use to catch bleak down on your local canal!

Angly - By all means you can use your more substantial rod just keep the set up balanced and accept it's limitations, i.e. don't use light lines or float fish with it. Because you don't have to cast to the horizon at Wingham, you can use feeders and legers quite successfully. I can assure you that if you hook any of the male tench they will certainly put a bend in your rod!

Regards,

Steve C.

Angly i have a pair of Old 2lb test through action carp rods i can bring along plus a cpl of spare alarms. May even have reels to suit aswell have to dig into the bottom of my pit. The carp rods are very through action and would be ok for wingham i reckon there soft especially by today's standards. When i sort my gear i'll throw any spare stuff in the van just incase anyone needs it.

Terry

everytime i catch a fish i'm lucky when i blank i'm a hopeless angler.

Not much more to add on tactics except to echo what Budgie and other have said - stout gear is what you want. I don't know if Steve feeds his fish steriods on the sly, but all Wingham fish seem to be turbo-charged! I've had good perch in the past that I honestly thought were double figure pike! And Steve C isn't exaggerating about the male tench! Add in the sharp bars and the fact that the fish aren't pressured and don't mind heavy line, and it makes sense, you don't want to lose a fish because it could well be very special indeed.

1.5 or 1.75lb tc rods are ideal, with 8lb or 10lb mainline, and good strong hooks. I usually use size 6 for lobworm and anything from 8-12 for other baits. Nothing fancy is needed - the important thing is working out where the fish are likely to be (or more accurately, where they might pass through) and fishing accurately. Listen to Steve and the baliffs - no-one knows the water better!

Some light pole elastic or similar is useful for tying on your line so you can clip up when recasting, so you can fish accurately.

Rigs don't matter really, do whatever you're comfortable with, if you fish the right spots you'll catch. It might not be a net-full but there's every chance of a biggie B)

I meant to add this to my post - powergum's my top choice for my marker knot as it's much easier to work with than pole elastic as the stretch is less.

Accuracy's vital as a few feet off target could mean you're on top of a bar in 18" of water rather than at the base in 12'.

I've come to think of Wingham as a fractal water with an almost infinite length of "margin" due to the number of bars - there's never a shortage of features to fish to, the only question is which one to choose!

I will bring a couple of spare rigged up rods as well. Got my three old 12' 1 3/4 lb rods as well if anyone wants to borrow them. And four spare buzzers? And a Nash Oval bivy.

Let me know though as Im only going to bring the spare stuff if people want it.

Geoffs allready bagged my spare bedchair though.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Will, thank you for the info and possible rod loan offer, but I think I'm covered now.

Steve, thanks for the info.

Terry, if I could borrow just one of your 2lb rods please? I'm OK for alarms and reels. I was going to partner my 1.5lb TC 'barbel' rod up with my old '80s 1.75lb TC 'carp' rod that I handed down to my eldest, but the logistics of picking it up before Wingham proved impossible.

Does everyone attending, even those not partaking of the BBQ, intend to up rods and socialise at lunch time? Hope so. What time is the BBQ anyway? I'm trying to schedule my weekend.

Almost everyone comes to the BBQs. They're at about 1pm each day. I'll be sending out an information sheet shortly.

A tent will do at a pinch, but I'm sure someone can lend you a bivvy. I'm already lending mine out, and Rob Ward is bringing a spare for another guest.

I was planning to use a more or less bivvy-sized tent that I own - should be OK, shouldn't it?

My mobile phone has pretty awful battery life - will it be possible to top it up in the clubhouse?

Anderoo and I fished Farmoor for trout on Saturday, and as a result I now look like a tomato - possibly a tomato who secretly aids Mexican peasants against their evil oppressors, as I have a mask-of-Zorro style white stripe where my sunglasses were. So, I will be remembering some sun block, which unfortunately will probably guarantee rain.

Any other odds and ends people might forget?

Amazing isn't it, sunburn and shivering cold at the same time

I always take a little notebook and pencil, so that I can draw a picture of the skyline opposite and mark where my baited spots are. I soon forget otherwise. It means I can recast accurately day or night (together with the pole elastic on the line).

Wellies are useful in case the ground is boggy in places.

Torch or (even better) headtorch is essential.

I always take antibacterial baby wipes to keep my hands clean.

There is a universal phone charger and battery recharger in the clubhouse.

Not long now!
