I'm an Anglersnet virgin, come to think of it i'm a internet virgin so be gentle with me. I am off to my local lake in the morning and i was going to try a few snails and slugs, i have just read on this site some people have had some luck with these slimey little critters. I've been fishing for about a year and never really targetted any particular fish, i'm happy to catch anything. So i will be happy to let you all know how it went (got a few worms just to give me a chance).

Hello Irons, welcome to Anglers Net :)

I'll move this thread over to the coarse fishing forum, you'll hopefully get more replies from there. I know that slugs are a good bait for chub though....

To be honest i have found them really good for stalking chub on small rivers. a freelined black slug can be really great bait as long as you keep quiet and out of sight the chub will often take the bait as soon as it hits the water. i have never tried them on a lake though but others might have. one thing that does work on a lake for carp tench etc. cockles (not in vinegar) can really kill on lakes.

take a look at my blog

I am a big fan of terrestrials of all sorts. Not guaranteed to catch on all venues on all days but certainly worth a try.

You will usually find out fairly quickly if a particular critter is on the menu on a given day.

Best of luck to you and we'd love to hear how you did - be it a great day or just a day out in nice surroundings. We've all had plenty of both over the years.

Yep should be interesting..but I would guess that they will not be as effective in still water as they are on rivers, as Peter says they are deadly for chub, especially on small streams.

John Wilson did a piece a few years back on just this thing, used a branch and a piece of line tied direct and a big fat black slug as bait. Caught a nice chub or two, which proves that you don't have to be a tackle tart to catch fish :)

Many years ago - I took a (mainly) non-fishing mate along to an easy local club lake with the promise of his 1st ever carp. Easy - pah! far from it whilst I caught a few fish my mate was fishless - despite going through all the baits we'd brought. 'Shall I try this slug' he said in desparation - 'why not, chub likes them' says I. So after a getting in a slimy mess getting one on the hook he lowers said slug into the margins where it is istantly grabbed by a carp of around 6lbs which is duely landed. Pleased as punch hes off like a shot collecting slugs and IIRC ended the day with around a dozen carp to 8lb....

Definitely give them a go, take some other bait too just in case though. They'll cost you nothing but getting slime on your hands :D

I've tried both (fairly half-heartedly, admittedly) but never caught on either. If we get a proper summer I'll try slugs again when stalking chub.
