I'm NOT bothered either

 

I did'nt want the rod and reel for myself, let me bore you with a story about a young lad who is now a young man

 

About 10 years ago Frans and I were Carp fishing when this young lad came up and asked if he could sit with us and ask questions, he must have been about 12 or 13 at the time and had cycled 10 miles to get to our water. I say our water because there were only 3 people allowed to fish it at the time. Anyway, over the next few months we/I saw a lot of him, he patrolled the water outside my flat and if I saw him would walk with him and chat about fishing and stalking fish. Over the next year I taught him all I knew about water craft and Carp/fishing in general. (bit big headed here but he said that what I taught him was a great help to him not only in fishing but later on at boot camp and specialised training in the army) I digress.

 

He was still at school so did not have the money to buy all the fancy rods and tackle that PROPER carp anglers MUST have so Frans and I fitted him out with what we could and took him fishing with us, we made a point of being away from our rods as much as possible and left him to look after them

 

He had a few fish while he was with us but one special fish was the first that he caught while he was on his own and outside my flat, he came up at 2300 and asked me to take a picture, I was a bit p133ed but dead chuffed that he had caught but more especially that he had no problem disturbing me at that time of night.

 

His family moved and I stopped Carp fishing due to the type of people that were taking up the SPORT

 

If you are still with me, on my birthday a lady came to the door with a present, it was from the lad, he was down stairs having JUST got out of hospital with a broken leg, the gift still has pride of place in our front room.

 

We lost contact after that because he joined the army. I spoke to his Dad and the lad was in the Dutch special forces, that made me feel a bit proud, bit like being a Dad I suppose.

 

I bumped into the lad 4 days ago, he had just returned from the Gulf and wanted to go fishing I explained that I was not too well at the moment but after his next Gulf tour which ends in April I will take him Fly fishing for Carp (surface fishing) with an instructor.

 

It would have been an expensive gift so Jeepster, sell it to Dave. I will give the him the presentation case of Flys that I have just purchased from JohnS.
