Who is the Nations Favourite Poet?

Dales

Recommended Posts

The BBC are running a poll to see who the nations favourite poet is. I know what a high brow and cultural bunch you all are, so who would you vote for?

I'm not a great Poetry fan in general but I am a huge fan of William Blake, both his art work and poetry. Therefore my vote went to him.

Maybe we have some budding poets on AnglersNet and you wish to share your words with the group? :D

I don't think I have a favourite. I have favourite poems, more than favourite poets. I voted for Larkin, because that's who I felt like voting for today, but on another day it could have been someone else - quite likely Hughes, Owen, Eliot or Thomas. Or even Frost or Poe - are only Brits included?

are only Brits included?

I think it also includes Non-Brits as I think Sylvia Plath was on the list and I think she is American.

This is really difficult as poetry is more suited to the topic than the person, so my favourite poet isn't really an option. I have favourite poems about particular topics - many I disagree with, but I hold the skill of writing about the subject in a set format in awe.

For wildlife it is Ted Hughes - that was his metier.

For writing about the human condition it would be Dryden, Milton or any of the metaphysical poets.

For humour it is Ogden Nash.

For inspiration, Rudyard Kipling

But if pressed, simply for his quotability and for teaching me to 'read' a dictionary properly, William Shakespeare - and as you can only vote once, he will have my vote.

It has to be Walter Garstang for me!

The Trilobites and After

Ere Snowdon raised it's lofty head above the Cambrian Sea

King Paradoxus called his sons - and many sons had he.

He looked around - and looking, was an action quite profound -

For his eyes were very rigid: 'twas his body that turned around.

'My sons,' he said, 'our neighbours, whether Brachiopod or Cystid,

Contentedly upon their stalks on sea-soup have existed,

The Graptolites that drift around have never done us hurt,

And we, detritus-feeders, have survived the dust and dirt.

'But a uniform environment of blue-black marl and mud

Has not induced variety, and variety is good.

The sea is getting deeper and the land is rising higher,

We're doomed unless we take some steps to get above the mire.

'I know we're not for enterprise ideally designed:

We're over-squat, with feeble legs exactly of one kind:

But if some of you would go ashore and change your respiration,

You might improve on what you see and work a reformation.'

The Paradoxus joined his sires, and the shore went up and down,

And every year adventurous sons would frizzle up or drown,

Until they learnt the tidal ways and from the sun took shelter,

Instead of getting all bemused and wandering helter-skelter.........

Another 13 verses to that but it's all good clean fun and jolly educational :D

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!
