I'm looking to get into pike fishing, ans i was just wondering if anyone could help me out.

1. When are you allowed to fish for Pike on Lake Windermere ( when does season start )

2. Is there anywhere on the lake where you can rent a boat with a motor?.

PB Common Carp: 7lb 7oz

1. Everywhere you can access the bank that permits fishing.

2. Yes lots of them but try to negotiate an Anglers price rather than tourist rates or you'll get ripped off.

The Windermere and District website is a good starting point and has a lot of information regarding Piking on Windermere:

To be quite honest though - Windermere is not a water to cut your teeth on as a Pike Angler, there are smaller more managable waters in the area.

On the other hand, you can't really fish all of a large lake (and much of it is not worth fishing anyway) so if you have a way to locate areas that hold pike and can get a sonar unit for the boat so you can quickly locate features, fishing a small area of a large lake is much like fishing a smaller water.

mate unless windermere is on your doorstep id start off on a more modest lake

to fish from a boat is a little more specialised than you may imagine and has been pointed out unless you have decent boat skills then you shouldnt really contemplate hitting one of the wilder waters from the off

I appreciate that boat fishing on a decent size lake needs some caution but it certainly can be fun and safe enough with proper precautions.

From memory, we've had folks over the years ask about trying a boat session on one of the Lake District waters and the responses are usually along the lines of, "Don't try it. Fishing big lakes is hard and it can be dangerous."

Given the number of anglers on here with lots of fresh water boat fishing experience and the fact that with decent weather forecasts and the availability of sonar units to make fish & feature finding much easier, it should certainly be possible to have a good outing. I'd really love sometime to see responses along the lines of how to do it rather than why to not even try.

Several of my locals are comparable to Windermere so I would be happy to offer some general suggestions on locating likely spots on the lake. Severus routinely fishes a really big lake (I think you could sink England in Lake Michigan so it is BIG) and he does well so would also be a good source of info. Some of our pike anglers should certainly be able to pitch in on what sorts of structure the UK pike in that area might like and on lure selection. JanO has posted enough photos & trip reports to show that he is no stranger to pike from a boat on large lakes either. Vagabond has fished so many different areas and caught so many species on all sorts of lakes & rivers that he almost certainly would have ideas for Windermere

Catching or not, the experience should be really enjoyable and that's the point of holidays.

Newt, and henda dont take this personally as its a generalisation.

The amount of uk based anglers who think to take up pike fishing and assume a water such as windermere is a good starting point is frightening. On quite a few occasions now ive run into anglers up there who for one reason or another should never have left home.

Let me cite a couple of examples

1st up the caring carper fishing on coniston who lost in the region of 15 pike all of which snapped his line he had daiwa magnum rods long cast baitrunners top flight delkims nets mats etc all good so far but he was happy using 6lb mono to 15lb wire, i came to blows with this chap after offering him a full spool of mono and a fair few traces.

2nd the happy campers who happily throw rods out then cut the trees down to have fires at night

3rd the well meaning who get most of the ideas with regards to gear but then fail miserably as the waters they usually fish are only a few acres, compared to banks measured in miles

now to compare it to your USA style of fishing boats are very much in a minority over here with probably pike anglers owning the vast majority of freshwater boats, trout waters have hire boats as do a few of the bigger waters.

What none of these places do is tell you all the background info you need on the most basic of safety principles such as anchoring rough weather handling etc some dont even supply you with life jackets and some only supply bouyancy aids with no requirement you wear them at all times.

Now a little info on me i have pike fished for nigh on 20 years now (started in the winter of my thirteenth year) and i have been on hire boats for around 7 years and i got myself a small boat last year (10 ft sniper) i wouldnt venture onto windy with my experience in my boat i will in the near future be heading out with two groups of friends who have both recently bought larger craft than i have.

Could i honestly recomend that henda11 hits windermere? no never especially on a boat unless he is out with someone who knows what they are doing.

to be a bit on the harsh side if you look at hendas photo it looks like a typical small carp puddle we have over here now if he sets foot on one of our glacials without a fair bit of info he is in for a rude and expensive awakening.

by all means any help i can offer is there for him to the point of if he lives close enough to me ill happily take him pike fishing to give him some idea of what to expect he wont be the 1st and certainly wont be the last
