Ignition coil

I have aquired this 'coil' which I think comes from an original Model T Ford can anybody throw any light on it for me. It produces one hell of an uninterupted spark.

Dan - the coil was the critter that threw spark to start the engine when you turned the crank. These were a little before my time but I'm pretty sure that at least some of the T series had to be crank-started like the A series did.
