Looks like a chaffer but it's a bit late in the year for those boys.

I'm sure one of the entymologists on here will give a positive ID.

Suddenly started getting these in my garden a few of years ago and they've become more abundant each summer. The sky in the evening is now thick with them - never seen anything like it. All they do is buzz around the trees and hedges. Possibly hunting for insects? They're quite harmless but can give you a fright when they bump into you!

Looks like a June beetle, or a related scarab beetle.

I saw a wasp like insect with a tail like a scorpion and a nose like gonzo off the muppets.

Anyone know what it is?

Probably a scorpion Fly

Most likely is a Cockchafer but as I said it's a bit late in the year for them. There are several closely related species including one that looks like a jewel and lives in old orchards.
