Equalling one's PB Roach

Vagabond

Recommended Posts

It does look slightly breamy Anderoo, but none of the roach in that pond have the bright red eyes and fins of other places. Didn't weigh it and I've had considerably larger ones from the same place anyhow, I just enjoy fishing for them on a waggler and a bit of paste. I can walk down in five minutes with a little rucksack and be fishing in ten. Nearest thing to being a kid again.

I know what you mean, I've been doing exactly the same thing recently! I do like fishing 'all serious' for big fish, but I need the nice, relaxed, fun fishing to keep me sane :)

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

That's a lovely fish blockend, but it looks to be a bit 'breamy' to me? Could be wrong, it's a tough call sometimes.

I don't want the thread to degenerate into "The only true roach are the ones caught by me", and I'm not going to be judgemental about someone else's fish, but .......

Roach have an anal finray count of Three spiny rays, followed by nine to eleven soft rays.

Bream have an anal finray count of Three spiny rays, followed by 24 to 30 soft rays.

Hybrids will have some number in between.

Count the anal fin rays on the "Blockend " fish and make up your own mind.

Excellent story Dave!

If by any chance you want to target the chub rather than the roach don't forget whitebait.

Steve, I quite enjoyed the stillwater chub, but my problem here is to find a bait attractive to a big roach that WON'T get taken by a chub first !

We have had threads about :-

the best bait for chub,

how many different baits have you caught chub on

the most unusual bait you have caught chub on,

your favorite chub bait.

etc etc

Overall conclusion - the buggers will eat anything............ :(

How many rays does it have, my eyes can't tell? If it is a wrong'un, which is quite possible I'd base it on the shoulder and the copper coloured scales. Trouble is all the roach (?) in that pond look the same. Are hybrids sterile, or do they become progressively weaker strains?

BTW, lest anyone suggests I'm passing off funny money I almost never weigh fish (well, maybe if the pike looked a thirty) and seeing my mug in the comics holding fish porn would be my idea of hell. I like to think I've reached a state of zen-like, all-rounderness where size and taxonomy really doesn't matter.

Just been reading the threads about "Is it too hot for fishing?" and "Sod the weather, just go"

It was hot and bright today in East Sussex, but I went fishing anyway.

Used the same tactics as in earlier postings to this thread.

Got five more chub today - four 3lb plus and a 4lb.

All from very close to the Norfolk reed beds, all on big-roach-mouth-sized halibut pellets.

No decent roach though. Will try a 3Cs approach next time (Cockles, Casters, Chick Peas)
