From an old post of mine... "I caught a 7½lb carp last year on a bare size 6 hook with a swan shot pinched on the line just above it, while plumbing the depth. The carp took the shot on the drop and was properly hooked."

 

There were some comments on the similarity to small snails that had been successfully used as bait and also catching on black plastic beads.

carp are so often stocked to unnatural levels, especially on modern commercial fisheries, they'll eat virtually anything to scratch out a living. as already suggested the hungry cypry probably saw a bit of movement and went for it. in a more natural environment where they can choose from a variety of foodstuffs they're still the craftiest things with fins. :)
