There was an article on tv the other day about these things. They are seen as movable trailers and therefore don't require planning permission. The landowner allows them to be kept where they are in return for rent. There are hundreds of these things lining motorways, and the law doesn't permit banners lining motorways - these trailer ads are just a way of circumventing the law, which hasn't caught up yet.

 

Therefore, a 12 bore seems the most effective way of making the point.

There's a double decker Bus on the Dutch / Belgian border with an ad for 'Diana's parlour - nice big 'girly' graphic on it - slows the traffic to a crawl (all noting down the directions!)

 

As long as it's 'off road' & moved off site once every 3 months it's 'temporary' and you don't need permission - same as a mobile caravan on a camp site.

I thought signs like the one shown were illegal because they were a distraction to motorist and likely to cause an accident as mentioned by awaar.

It obviously hasn't worked in my case because I've probably driven passed it loads of times and not seen it. Or is it just a trait of women drivers?!
