sandwich paste

i have found a shop that does little tubs of salmon flavoured sandwich paste for 20p and even though i doubt it contains much salmon and wouldnt want it on a sandwich it seems to work great kneaded in to ground bait,

it seems to effect the rate at which the ground bait breaks down so it might not do for all situations but the big bream on one of the lakes that i fish seem to like it,

the lake is pretty deep and it seems to be stopping the ground bait from breaking up before getting down to the bottom and seems to be adding a bit of extra attraction

I've used it loads of time for making paste. It works a treat.

Andy Macfarlane:

Simple paste:

Take 2 slices of day old white bread and make a sandwich with the flavouring of your choice. I've used cheese, jam, marmalade, preserves, just tried mustard and it works well, meat spreads, fish pastes, marmite, bovril, honey, golden syrup, molasses, liquidised sweetcorn etc. etc.

Put the sandwich in the blender and blitz at full speed until the sandwich has been broken down into a loose/dryish crumb.

Now add any other additives you wish to include. Not too much mind. A little squirt of 'Van Den Eynde Liquid Corn' for instance goes a long way.

Check the crumb. It should be slightly moist to the touch and it should be forming a loose dough.

Now beat an egg yolk and introduce that to you mixture a little at a time. Half a yolk should be enough. The egg simply acts as a binder.

Now add any food colouring if you wish. Red and yellow seem to be pretty universal.

Take the mixture and put it in a sandwich bag. Knot it and leave it somewhere warm overnight to 'mature'.

In the morning you should have a paste resembling play-dough. Take a pinch and roll it on the palm of your hand. It should form a stiff ball without much fuss.

Stick it on a hook and cast.

If you have a blender and any coarse angler should, it's as simple as making the sandwich our choice. Put whatever flavour you want that day in the sarnie and blitz away....dawdle.

  • 2 weeks later...

i tried a mix similar to the one suggested by andy and it works great.

fished with a float set down slightly over depth so that just the tip breaks the surface with 3 small shot just off the bottom,

with some of the paste loosely pressed on to the the bottom shot with corn and pellets added, and the hook laying on the bottom a few inches so as the paste softens in the water the float breaks free after a few seconds and rises up pulling your hook bait next to the pile of paste/pellet mix on the bottom

i am sure someone on here can suggest a way of improving the tactic and it would probably work better lowered in on a pole than it does on my match rod but it is definitely working for me

Sorted. I would change a thing. If it's working, you could try slight variations on the same theme but I wouldn't alter much. What are you catching?

i have been catching mainly crucians and bream but also picked up a few tench and a 6lb common carp,

i have found in the past that getting fish into the swim early on is the key but it can take a while before bites start to develop after balling in groundbait,

lowering in a ball of the paste mix pressed to the bottom shots doesnt seem to spook any fish that are already in the swim and gets the loose feed down to the bottom without it getting hovered up by small fish higher in the water

cheers for all the help andy

Just a thought here. Don't you find you're getting false bites with fish nibbling the paste round your shot?

it doesnt seem to have been a problem so far i have been using more of a ground bait mix and it seems to all come off but i never thought that bits may get caught on the shot

i have only tried it on one session but it seemed to work well but might cause problems on other venues or sessions so i may have to find a new way of getting loose feed down to the bottom without disturbing the swim
