Audi mechanics?

Recommended Posts

I have an Audi 1.9tdi SE (130) 51 plate.

My problem is....dry weather it runs like a dream , no probs whatsoever. Rain , especially when it is parked up and i jump in to go somewhere , there is a MASSIVE reduction in power. When depressing the throttle to get going the engine splutters and sometimes cuts out , other times there is hardly any response at all , but if you are lucky enough to get the revs up passed 3000rpm then the turbo kicks in and you look a right wally when your but is shoved back into the seat and set off like road runner.

I've had it over to the garage and they have suspected the airflow meter which is apparently common on Audis to fail every now and then. Changed that and the problem remains. Disconnect the airflow meter and it runs slightly below normal power but more than acceptable.

Any ideas???

Sounds like its going into some sort of safe mode (reduced power) to protect the engine/electronics.

I think with Audi's the only way to properly diagnose the problem is to take it to a dealership and put it on the diagnostic machines

Try some damp start. If you can get hold of a spare pair of HT leads, stick those on.

It's related to the damp, so my suspicion would be something electrical breaking down.

From what you've said, though, I would always go for the leads first. When I put my Evo back on the road recently, a similar thing happened. A new set of performance leads sorted it.

My best guess would be that the Mass airflow (MAF) sensor is failing/dirty.

Whoops!

If it only happens when it's wet, though, I'd look for that as the problem first, before assuming something was faulty.

Thanks for the ideas lads.

Problem sorted though.

After a full scale hunt under the bonnet , the problem was the EGR valve?? apparently it works alongside the airflow meter/ mass air flow , it's hidden just behind the drivers side headlamp and when removed for inspection it had serious signs of water damage.

Anyway , EGR valve replaced and tested in todays beautiful summer weather NOT , torrential downpours a plenty while it was stood outside (perfect scenario for the above fault) and it works a treat.
