"Conrad" radiator fixings

The Pug 406 has just been down for its MOT and passed with no trouble at all.

Only thing the bloke rang up to say its on its way back to you but you've got a split in the radiator, eh?? :o Now there was no problem with the cooling system when it left me in the morning, it transpires they ran it up too hot and what pretends to be a header tank has a split in it requiring the rad to be replaced.

After many arguments they refuse to accept responsibility for this split, so gotta fix it myself and I will not return there in the future.

Now this thing has what's called Conrad fittings to hold the hose pipes to the inlet and outlet of the rad, however I have no idea whatsoever how to remove these things can anyone tell me how to do it?

If the hat's missing

I've gone fishing

they look like rings with a lump in? easy a heavy pair of cutters or a hacksaw replace them with stainless jubilee clips

or are they rings with a lump and a square spike jutting out? ,squeeze them together (so the spike goes towards the lump) with mole grips or a gas spanner and wriggle the pipe off while doing so then reasemble the same way wriggling the pipe on with a bit of washing up liquid or silicone sealent

HMMMM they are strange beasts try this :

Modern MOT tests require engines to be at operating temp for emissions tests etc. The car can be running for 30 mins or so. If there is a weakness in the cooling system the MOT test usually finds it. A cooling system in good order should allow the engine to tick over indefinitely without overheating. I suggest you check the cooling fan thermostat and connections. These commonly get corroded and prevent fan operation thus overheating the engine.

Unfortunately this is a fault with your car and not the responsibility of the MOT testers. I make a point of letting my vehicles sit in the drive with the engine running for an hour or so a week before the MOT test to make sure everything works which allows me plenty of time to fix it if anything isn't.

Although a pain, I'd rather have the car overheat on the MOT test ramp than in a traffic jam on the motorway!

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!
