depends how the fish want it!

 

in my experience thats usually either shallow or in the bottom 18 inches

 

for shallow, ull need quite a thick bristled float to help u differentiate between liners and real bites, other than that i fish it as shallow caster

 

for deep rig, just a bulk, and 2 droppers.

 

match the hook size to ur hookbait, which should be a size bigger than ur feed pellet, which should be matched to the fish and the conditions.

 

i either hook expanders, or hair rig big pellets with a baitband pulled through

I got a pellet pump for five quid at one of the tackle shows, works every time.

Been using 10mm pellets, prepared with it today and the Tench loved them.

Quest what sort of pellets are you talking about ? The expanding ones like the guys are talking about or the bigger, hard ones like 15, 21mm halibut pellets ?

Yeah Halibut pellets are a top bait. They are hard so you will need to drill a hole in them if you want to put them on a hair rig.

 

I always hair rig them but you could also try using bait bands, but I tend to find the pellet falls out of the band.

 

I do like RossMc's idea with the fake pop up pellet. Think I will give that a try myself.

Dales, I also use bait bands to hold my Halibut pellets...if I cant get bands the right size then I make my own with superglue....The 25lber on the "season has started" was on a large halibut pellet, and the 16+ and the 6.8 tench the next day :D

 

Don't worry about the band showing, the pellet starts to break down and the soft surface will mask any elastic.

 

I must admit that I prefer "o" rings though.
