please pick up discarded line

chesters1

Recommended Posts

just got very wet and muddy rescuing a young duck caught in line and tethered to a semi submerged branch.

poor thing was on its last legs as ducks actually can't float when they are wet!

not sure how long it had been there but wet to the skin and very cold .

i will post a picture later when it dries out.

we know they are pests on occasions but they deserve a place on our ponds as well.

now its here (to weak to let go) i'm going to get it in the neck when my mrs gets home (out gallivanting with son and his car) not just for the wet trousers but the very visible trail i left on the carpet before i looked round.

so to please me ,PETA and my mrs for heavens sake take your line home or at least try to get it out of trees if your a crap caster!

well just popped to the shed to see how it had dried out but it was dead ,no doubt the wetting and me wading to it and a bumpy trip home frightened it to much to preen despite the shed being nice and warm.

i tried :(

mr fox will find it later when it comes for bread so something will gain i suppose

A pretty grim story. and gives all anglers a bad name.

...and its so easy to make line safe - just wind it round and round your fingers and cut through the loops before putting it in a bag, taking it home and putting it in the bin.

.....just putting it in the dustbin uncut is not good enough - it will finish up as a death-trap for scavenging birds on the tip.

....the same goes for those abominable plastic webs used to hold six-packs together. Once saw a herring gull on a tip entangled in one and have made sure to cut the webs of any I find ever since.

A pity we don't do as the Aussies do - sell cans in "slabs" of 24 or "blocks" of 48. Six-packs are for wimps.

A local club says in its rules that all anglers are to keep their pegs tidy and that any rubbish found there will be assumed to be yours and you will be asked to leave.

Ime sure some will have a moan but I have no problem with that.

I would hope that if I had let a bit of rubbish or line go astray that anyone finding it would remove it for me so I am quite happy to do the same for others.

I'm ultra conscious of making sure I bag-up my line, even little snip offs. I even exaggerate my bagging movements so it's obvious to a causal observer that I am not the culprit when it comes to discarded line (the odd tree decoration excluded!). It's such a shame commercials waters, and even my club, don't take a harder line (excuse pun) on the litterers.

Onya chesters1 for bringing the subject up again. Yesterday, got about 200 metres of 40 lb line that was draped around several branches. Some mindless morons have no idea of keeping our waterways clean.

Thanks, mate.

mr fox found his supper but i would have preferred the duck even if it was in its bait diving annoying scene to have had his instead.

examined the line ,no hook nor shot and no marks at all on the bird so i guess it was discarded line rather than an angler bird direct confrontation.

not the first this year i found one of the very tame robins dead trapped in line in the margins

trouble is you can have as many rules in the permit as you want but catching the culprit is almost impossible ,i go down to check permits once a day another bailiff once every other day.we can see who was in the swim when we visited but you cant accuse them if lines found after they go (when you go round the next day) because someone else may have fished there after they went.

i remember when i used to go down 3 times a day anglers changed swims and new anglers appeared frequently :(

ps i hoovered up before she got home luckily the trail disappeared ,shoes though very pongy despite wash :whistling:

i often wonder if some people ever get the hang of casting ,i'v retrieved it from very strange places and some easily within reach of your hand ,if i can get the stuff why cant the fooking loser? i'm also shocked at some of the line anglers use i wouldnt use it sea fishing! no rules to cap heavy line only a minimum rule for cat fishing.

I use one of these.

Does the job perfectly.

Janet

what a great bit of kit ,unfortunately though only the good angler will ever use it if noddy cant be bothered to pick it up anyway he's unlikely to pick it up to put in that great machine.

i might pass on your link in case the committee wish to buy some for the bailiffs but unfortunately i doubt if they will but its worth while passing it on ,cheers Janet

hmmmm i can see a flaw for bailiffs use! does it handle line with shot and hooks on?

perhaps Elton could advertise it on AN ,i'm sure AN's members are responsible anglers and i'm sure the maker will be happy to provide a few for prizes ,perhaps?

does it handle line with shot and hooks on?

I find enough discarded line with shot on to make the purchase of shot a rare event for me.

Just as well with the present price of shot

12 SSG in a box for £1.20 last time I bought. - that's 10p for each swan shot.

Would you pick up two or three 10p pieces you had dropped ?

Exactly !

Can't understand the mentality behind discarded tackle.
