Griff Rhys Jones angers anglers with command to disturb fishermen

Says the Daily Telegraph:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/588...-fishermen.html

TV star Griff Rhys Jones has angered anglers after encouraging canoeists and boaters to "disturb as many fishermen as possible" on their travels.

Rhys Jones has just finished filming a BBC documentary in which he rediscovered the country's forgotten rivers by travelling along them in a canoe.

The 55-year-old has been vocal in his criticism of anglers who he claims have too much say and control over British rivers and wants water users to exact some revenge by spoiling their chance of a catch....

...Rhys Jones said after his year canoeing, swimming and surfing along British waterways, he had discovered the rivers 'no longer belong to the people' but had been hijacked by stockbrokers, anglers and farmer.

"Private fishing clubs have bought up the banks, controlling the water to the middle where they meet rival fishing clubs," he complained.

"You cannot pass without permission. Our dislocation from our watery heritage has happened so slowly that no one has really noticed."

As long he knows I'm entitled to cast lead weights around any of the waters I fish, he better watch out. I might not see him, wearing glasses and all. I might just brain the man.

I don't mind been bothered by canoeist's as long as they don't mind been bothered by a pouch of maggots been sprayed all other them.

We tend to forget that the mere mention of the word maggot strikes fear and panic in most people.

Once as a kid fishing on the lea navigation I had my rod pulled in by a team of 4 rowers who then proceeded to go through a number of other peoples line. A kind chap near me shouted at them and helped me get my rod back that had been pulled around 200 metres along the canel through loads of other peoples tackle. Needless to say we were all in a mess. Rather then try to help untangle the mess of line from their oars, the rowers just stared snapping lines and lifting their oars up pulling more rods in. The kind man who helped me get my rod back got a mouth full of abuse from the rowers, words I had never heard before.

With some peoples line still attached they just started to row off again, one angler then fired a pouch of maggots at them, then another pouch went out and then all the anglers started it. At this early age I learned a respect for match anglers. I could not believe how accurate those guys were, maggots were raining on the rowers and all the balls of grounbait were landing in the boat. I salute you match men.

One of the rowers went crazy trying to brush the maggots off, but the rest just kept rowing and soon were out of range.

On reflection the stretch of water they were trying to row down was not wide enough for them and they should not have rowed their, they must have known fisherman were in the area, around 40 all packed in tight with poles.

Sometimes disputes are caused by fisherman, I have seen anglers casting large weights against moored boats not bothered that they thud in to some one elses property and so its no surprise that if anglers have bashed the side of some ones boat they think nothing of going through our lines at times.

In my example as a kid I think the blame lies with the rowers and also me been a unexperienced angler and not knowing to sink my line.

We should all be able to use our waters and with a little understanding from both sides we should all be able to get along with out to much tension.

Or is that a little nieve, well if we cant get along just make sure you have plenty of spare maggots.

Stephen

Understanding is fine. I don't mind a bit of boat to bank etiquette either. I use boats and always give bank anglers breathing space and turn down the revs on the motor and I expect the same in return. When some git, who should probably know better, who has friends in the fishing community it seems, decides they are going to start some sort of 'who owns what' War On The Water, they had better watch out for the 4 oz leads.

So he wants to canoe the rivers.

He has no problem with advocating a free for all on sections of water that are not deemed to be navigable by the EA.

He has no problem with wanting to these waterways for free when others pay for the privilege.

He has no problem with disturbing wildlife and gate-crashing SSSI's and hasn't bothered to say that it would be a bad idea in the spring.

Presumably, he has no problem with getting kids onto urban rivers with all the encombant dangers of weirs debris and overhanging trees.

Did someone say he was a to55er ?

Actually to kayak/canoe on rivers/canals you have to have a boat licence form British Waterways / the EA (usually obtained as part of membership of the BCU) so actually canoists/kayakers do pay to use them. He's a prat for advising canoists/kayakers to disrupt anglers though respect should be shown for all users of the waterways.
