Getting the back off a watch

Sportsman

Recommended Posts

I have a Lorus Indiglo watch. It is a cheapie but I like it because it is clear, easy to read and has a good luminous face that I can see.

I need a battery replacement but I can't see any way to get the back off. The back plate is completely smooth with no discernible lip or groove to lever it off.

I took it to the local shop but she couldn't do it. We have no specialist watch repairers, at least within 60 miles so that's out, it would cost more than the watch is worth.

I am reluctant to bin it for something so trivial, although the thought of a 4lb lump hammer has crossed my mind, so

Anyone come across this before and any suggestions

Ta

Dave

It is to be observed that 'angling' is the name given to fishing by people who can't fish.

If GOD had NOT meant us to go fishing, WHY did he give us arms then??

(If you can't help out someone in need then don't bother my old Dad always said! My grandma put it a LITTLE more, well different! It's like peeing yourself in a black pair of pants she said! It gives you a LOVELY warm feeling but no-one really notices!))

Is there two slight cuts or grooves cut at 180 degrees to each other ?, if there are then its a screw back and turns anti clockwise, if no grooves or pin holes to take the back off, then its a prise off back that you will have to compress back on, if its a compress back it will have a sealing ring around the back where it fits into the watch

Can you take a photo of the back of the watch and post it on AN?

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Here it is

As stated, there is no lip or indentation to get a blade into to prise the back off.

My wife had a watch with a similar problem, it took me hours to get the back off. In the end, once the back was off it was evident that the back was tapered where it went into the casing and so considerable force was required to break the fit. From your picture it looks as if there may be a taper on yours (unless it's just a shadow) especially at the right hand side (on the photo). As I recall I used a butterknife to remove it!

Good luck.

p.s I used to have a Timex Indiglo. Are they the same company now or is it a trade mark for a specific illumination system?

I know the answer to this one. Indiglo is the IP of Indiglo Corporation. Indiglo Corporation is wholly owned by Timex for licensing the Indiglo electroluminescent technology. I too have an Indiglo watch, mine is made by Timberland, and has a standard screw on back.
