Should Carp have pet names?

While reading the thread on the death of Benson, it got me thinking about the whole naming fish thing.

 

Why give them names? To be honest when I catch a fish I like to think that I am the only person to catch them, I know this is not true and I am likely to the hundredth person to land them. The only time I may be the first is while wetting a line in Ireland.

 

When I land a fish, I dont like to be told that its "Fred" and the last time he was landed he weighed an extra 10oz. Come talk to me while fishing, we can talk about baits, the football, whats in my sandwiches, but don't tell me the pet name of the fish I have just caught :angry:

 

If some one tells me there are 30lb Carp in a lake, I will fish for them. But if they name the biggest fish "Rubber Lips" and give me the actual weight 39lb 4oz, I will not set out to target "Rubber Lips". I know some anglers have long campaigns to catch one named fish, I just don't get it, but I suppose what ever rocks your boat.

 

Can we not go back to just calling them fish and drop the stupid pet names?

I don't really get it! For me fishing is about the mystery of what you might catch, knowing what is already in a lake kinda ruins it for me!

 

Anderoo and I once named a chub, the greedy so and so always nabbed the bait first cast in a lovely looking swim on the windrush. After a few captures however we stopped fishing that swim as we felt a little sorry for the fish being caught all the time!

Where exactly was the swim, what bait did you use, what was the last weight you landed Percy at?

 

I am going to spend the rest of the season, maybe many seasons targeting Percy :D

I remember one summer when my mate managed not only to hog the best swim on the pond for most of the school holidays but to get the swim absolutely figured out. There was a distinctive looking nice perch of about 2lb - his PB at the time, as I recall - which he caught again and again - dumb fish!

 

Naming fish is OK in my book, so long as they haven't been caught yet. Giving a name to a monster you've only glimpsed is different to setting out to bank some poor creature that's been in and out of the water more times than Duncan Goodhew's earlobes.

Alas, Percy is no more..................torn apart by a pack of ravening demented otters (they were nuts!)

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

Yes I think you may be right, having a name for the mythical Pike that lives under the old bridge that has never been caught, but every one who has seen it swears it's eight foot long and eats ducks, donkeys and cows is not the same as the Carp that's been in and out of the water more times than Duncan Goodhew's earlobes :lol:

Today my local radio (BBC radio Suffolk) had a field day picking up on benson this morning. They found it odd that a carp should have a name and generally took the pee out of anglers, in a politically correct manor of course.

 

They then went on to drag up how first it was eastern europeans killing all the carp then it was otters etc.

 

If the carp had not been named nobody would have shown any interest.

 

I find it slightly ironic reading the comments made on the newspaper site linked from the thread on benson that the so called animal lovers are upset at benson being caught 60 times but are quite happy for him to be chased around by an otter and eventually eaten bit by bit until he dies.

I suppose it's a source of amusement for other anglers. The problem is when something happens such as the demise of "Benson" it makes all anglers look like sad tw@ts

The thing that feels wierd about it to me, is that fishing should be (shouldn't it?) trying to outwit wild creatures. Creatures with names are pets.

 

(PS Percy has a liking for luncheon meat :) )
