Should Carp have pet names?

But Den, Clarissa was put in the aquarium and kept more like a pet, (like my 'Bubbles' :)

Ive always had a bit of a problem with that.Catching a record fish, sticking it in London Zoo so that no one else could catch it and it slowly fading away due to being in captivity!

A different age though I suppose.

But imagine if the same had been done with the "Traveller" or "Two Tone" ? might have stopped all the sbsequent fuss over recaptures etc but Im sure it wouldnt have gone down to well!

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Wasn't that done just so the fish didn't have to be killed but the record could still be verified?

I think that Yorkio has a point with what he says, and it was an extraordinary fish compared with what had gone before.

Not like todays almost 'instant' specimens, that are often stocked near the same size as Clarissa!

I can understand your problem with it, but what would be the alternative, and still make a claim?

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

Aren't most carp in captivity? Just that their aquariums vary in size.

I usually fish on my own and the thought has crossed my mind on occasion, what would I do if I caught a potential record fish and I had no witnesses?

The only answer to that (for me) is return it unharmed! I'm not so sure that the subsequent publicity would be desirable for me or the fish!.

I suppose it's just my style of fishing, I enjoy being there!

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

Yes, it was exactly for that reason and at the time it was a perfectly reasonable thing to do. In fact if Dick hadn't have done that, carp fishing probably wouldn't be what it is today. Before his death, Dick confessed that if he had had an inkling of what he was going to start, he wopuld have done a lot of things differently. There was certainly nothing dodgy about what he did as has been suggested by others, he did something that was entirely acceptable in 1952 and was probably the first angler to claim and have ratified a record for a fish that wasn't killed.

What you should do is bop it over the head, put it on ice and claim the record. Once your fish has been verified, ask for it back and throw a decadent dinner party for your friends. Serve your record catch as the fish course.

The Angling Press will slaughter you, but the Anti's will love you. They don't seem to mind catching and killing them, but don't seem to like the catch and release.

Its a winner all round.

1. You get to claim the record.

2. Your friends get a slap up meal.

3. You annoy the Angling Press.

4. The fish is dead so no need to name it and no one is going to catch it next week weighing 2oz more and nick your record.

5. And if it was a Carp all the Carp haters on AN will respect you.

6. Eastern Europeans & Otters will love you for taking the heat of them. Worms will be the new threat to our fish stocks.

Simples :D
