Harry Edsel Smith of Albany, New York:

Born 1903-Died 1942

Looked up the elevator shaft to see if the

car was on the way down.

It was.

-----

In a Thurmont, Maryland, cemetery:

Here lies an Atheist

All dressed up

And no place to go.

-----

On the grave of Ezekial Aikle in East

Dalhousie Cemetery, Nova Scotia:

Here lies Ezekial Aikle, Age 102.

The Good Die Young.

-----

In a London, England cemetery:

Here lies Ann Mann,

Who lived an old maid

But died an old Mann.

Dec. 8, 1767

-----

In a Uniontown, Pennsylvania, cemetery:

Here lies the body of Jonathan Blake.

Stepped on the gas

Instead of the brake.

-----

In a Silver City, Nevada, cemetery:

Here lays The Kid.

We planted him raw.

He was quick on the trigger

But slow on the draw.

Here lies an honest lawyer,

And that is Strange.

-----

Anna Hopewell's grave in Enosburg Falls,Vermont

Here lies the body of our Anna -

Done to death by a banana.

It wasn't the fruit that laid her low,

But the skin of the thing that made her go.

-----

In a cemetery in England:

Remember man, as you walk by,

As you are now, so once was I.

Remember this and follow me.

To which someone replied by writing on the

To follow you I'll not consent

Until I know which way you went

-----

And last but not least, in Key West:

I told you I was sick!

Be good and you will be lonely.

And last but not least, in Key West:

I told you I was sick!

Wasn't that what Spike Milligan said he wanted for his epitaph?

"Dúirt mé leat go raibh mé breoite."

Is what it actually says. Its gaelic for

'I told, you I was ill' and is a compromise since his local vicar just outside Rye would not allow the english language version.

'I've got a mind like a steel wassitsname'

An airman was buried face down. His epitaph read:

'A pious aviator and wise

beneath this marble tablet lies.

R Suppards'

This is a signature, there are many signatures like it but this one is mine

Spike's grave does have the gaelic Epitaph, I'll take Argyll's word for the translastion:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?p...howCemPhotos=Y&

That's a good site for finding famous graves if you skip the pop up's.

I was thinking of adding a 'famous epitaph' section to my burial grounds website - but some may find it in poor taste, any sugestions?

Jealousy: totally irrational anger directed at people who happen to be richer, prettier, thinner, cleverer and more successful than you are.

Suggestion - certainly. If you want to do it, do it. If anyone is offended they can always click themselves elsewhere.
