Best upgrade ?

Recommended Posts

My old PC is getting a bit creaky and I have a couple of hundred pounds to upgrade it. I intend to do quite a bit of video editing / rendering and DVD burning so wonder whether to get a quad core cpu / motherboard / 4Gb of ram bundle or blow it all on a decent graphics card (I currently have a 2.8 gb CPU with 2gb ram)

Hard drive wise I have a 500gb external hard drive for the video so no probs there.

Any suggestions welcome.

Cheers

Dave

A young lad here in France did some SERIOUS looking and got himself one of these (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280392535250) And he has NOT regretted it! But use Eltons link! :-)

He has had it now around 4 months and never skipped a beat. I ordered and payed for it and they shipped to France for £35 and I have to say were excellent. i would certainly buy from them were I in the market.

It is to be observed that 'angling' is the name given to fishing by people who can't fish.

If GOD had NOT meant us to go fishing, WHY did he give us arms then??

(If you can't help out someone in need then don't bother my old Dad always said! My grandma put it a LITTLE more, well different! It's like peeing yourself in a black pair of pants she said! It gives you a LOVELY warm feeling but no-one really notices!))

That looks like a good deal Chris. One of them with 4GB RAM and Windows 7 on it would ROCK

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Thanks Chris but for some reason I can't open the link.

I have decided to go with an AMD Phenom Quad core CPU, new motherboard, new hard drive, 4gb of RAM and a new case, but I will keep the power lead and plug as I don't want to buy a new computer :P

Now, who knows anything about cloning hard drives?

Me, but cloning your old hard drive onto a brand new machine with a totally different architecture usually end in grief. What cloning software do you have? I know the acronis stuff and a little bit of ghost.

With 4Gig of ram won't you need windows XP64, Vista64 or Windows7 to get the full amount into use? That's assuming you haven't already got one or other?

Have to say the spec. sound impressive!!

32 bit windows will use 3.2ish gb if i rememeber right.

Another thing to consider is overclocking your cpu for a cheap fast alternative , quad core intel q6600's (2.4ghz) can be had for mucho cheapness nowadays and most will push on thru the 3ghz barrier with very little problems providing you have adequate cooling.

Graphics card wise at the mo is a pesonal choice with cards from ATI and Nvidia being pretty much same price/performance at the mo.

If you still looking for a graphics card hold off until after the 23rd of this month (sep) as ATI release its new higher end cards then and prices on everything else are expected to fall a tad.

Thanks for the advice.

All installed and working perfectly (almost  )

For cloning (and quite a few other things) I bought and downloaded a program called "spotmau" Very impressive :)

Could not believe how easy and effective it was. Literally 3 clicks and 20 minutes later I had copied 120Gb onto the new HDD.

The only problem was that all of my Adobe programs (In design, Acrobat and Photoshop) stopped working and had to be re-athorised. Everything else is fine.

The new Lian Li alumimium case is great, it's 3 12cm fans operate so much slower, and quieter than the previous case.

The whole system is now seriously quick running my old XP pro but I am toying with the idea of Windows 7 to see if they have got it right yet. ;)

I hated Vista Dave, but have been running Windows 7 Beta and then the Release Candidate for the last few months. Much better than Vista and a whole lot better than XP. My advice is go for Windows 7. It's what Vista should have been.

Just my two bit's worth. If you want I to PM me your address and I'll send you a Windows 7 RC DVD and Product Key (genuine) so that you can have a play.
