I cant believe this, a virgin new PC and am getting Blue screen shut downs only few days after getting it (not paid for yet luckily!) Its happened 4 times since getting it on 4th May, twice today.

The messages are mainly the same, some numbers different in parameters. MS support centre useless.

I have googled it and one suggestion is my hardware... if so how do i found out what!?

I have windows XP home SP2

Office (student )2003.

I run an old version of lotus smart suite cos its data base is easy to use and I'm used to it.

All programmes otherwise are pukka, Norton internet security 2008, norton ghost (which saved me when the old pc died. )This is the replacement. Some downloaded programmes such as adobe, realplayer, quicktime, windows defender.

Scanner and printer are a few years old, 1 dvd recorder new.(non in use at time of error).

Wan adapter ;new, external modem for faxes; new.

External hard drive new, not always connected when its happened so guess not involved.

Use Blue soleil usb thingy for blue tooth pics from fone to PC. Also not in use at time of errors.

My daughter has a sony walkman she charges and puts music on from pc, and we both have sony cyberspace cameras, neither of which have been connected at the time.

So any input welcome guys.

Thanks.. in hope

Try updating your ATI video card drivers for XP HERE or for Vista HERE

Latest driver was installed when it was built.... wondering if thats the problem?

I had a similiar problem with mine XP sp2 that I bought second hand. It was gently used. Turns out it was two different types of RAM. Hope you work it out.

A little out of my depth with blue screen problems, but there does appear to be a general issue with ATI drivers. I like Nvidia video cards myself. If you have not paid for it yet, why not take it back?

I need to be sure that it isnt my hardware causing the problem. It was built for me, not shop bought. I can make a fuss and get things changed but need to be sutre of my facts first!

OK, then why not unplug all your hardware, uninstall all your software (don't really see why you can't buy a new computer and not be able to use your stuff though) and see if the problem persists. If it does, suggest mixed RAM as Jeff suggests or the video card, or maybe it's something else but at the end of the day it's not really your problem if the goods supplied are not useable. Tricky situation if it's a mate who built it for you, but being a part-time geek myself I would not take offence if I were in his shoes and I would try and sort it out.

Thanks, I was just trying to avoid all that, and yes of course uninstall and redoing one at a time may be the answer .... but as you say I dont see why everything shouldnt work its all xp compliant. Yesterday I had the B$#@^ blue screen 4 times, thats the worst so far. Interestingly twice was when I was doing a norton ghost back up. I am suspicious of this, as that caused a problem on another pc I had too....

I think ram and card are also suspects. Especially in the light of the error messages. Thansk for input, just confirms thoughts in my head.

Its ok I know the guy will be cool with it, and will sort it... eventually, but as this is the first time I have trusted him with so much of my money ( when I hand it over!) I dont trust many computer people, my experience is that they bluff alot... so i wanted to have facts in my head so i will know if its a fairy story! And with the best will in the world it has my entire life story on the pc now, so I dont like the idea of it being out of my sight and if he is to fix it that is probably what it will mean.
