pike fishing - lake district?

I would say unless the prices were totally outrageous that such a chart would be invaluable when looking for a section of the lake to fish. Even with a boat and a really good sonar/gps with map overlay for the lake in question, I use paper charts to locate general areas I want to investigate.

My advice would be definitely NOT to fish Windermere if you are new to pike fishing. It is about as specialised a water as you can get in this country. The pike are very localised and no-one who fishes it is going to put a beginner on the right spots, when it could result in the death of a thirty pound fish. A boat is almost essential, bankside access is very limited on Windermere and not brilliant anywhere in the Lake District, as is car parking.

The only way a beginner should probably fish Windermere is with one of the professional guides.

If you want the same wild scenery (well better actually) but with the chance of actually catching something, you would be far better off driving north for a couple of hours and fishing one of the lochs in the Dumfries and Galloway area, like Loch Ken or one of the smaller ones. More midsize pike that you can catch using "normal" tactics, without all the ridiculous restrictions on what you are allowed to do and when. (Before long you'll only be allowed to fish in Windermere with a mackerel, with its fins cut off, on a Wednesday!)

Accomodation is cheaper up there than in the Lakes as well.

Henda I would go for it and it is a magical place especially since the 10mph water law has cut out the jet ski's, water ski's and the like, although I can echo some of the points made there are a few bank fishing spots BUT as there are a few they get crammed and if I was you I would look at fishing Windermere by boat and yes if you have the money a guide. As for topo maps PM me and I will give you a number for a book that has Widermere and all the other waters with good detail of depth contours, there is also another book with all the depths for the smaller lakes and tarns and the cost is only a few pounds but worth every penny.

Neil's link to WADAA is a good start to plenty of information on there but it really is a case of putting the hours in and dont expect too much too soon it took me a lot of blank days to find some worthy spots both from bank and boat, if your looking at fishing Windermere or Coniston the Environment Agency is running a Pike and Trout Log book scheme its free they send you out a canvas pack with Log books, so you can log weight, length, method caught, time and date etc, its a good way to monitor the head of pike in these lakes and if anyone is interested and fishes these give them a call,

Ben Bayliss or Debbie Davidson at the Penrith office of the Environment Agency on 01768 215757.

If your intent on fishing the Lakes there are other places to fish that aren't as busy and IMHO better fishing than Windermere, again PM me and I will gladly give you some places worth trying best of luck,

Regards Scott......

Winermere does sound like a bit of a 'heartbreak' water

Worth reading is Gord Burton's article in a book called 'Big Pike'....big bit on Windermere in there on lures (all from a boat). Sounds like he really fished the place hard and got the results but don't think it was easy like any big water!

Good luck, would love to fish the lakes one day

windy needent be if your reasonably competent its the same with all the glacial lakes dotted around me they all have slghtyly different 'temprements' but with a little knowledge of what you are doing they are relativly easy. it is the step up from what most would consider a big water that is the hardest thing most will face on a 60 or so acre water you can move easily around the place and get quite intimate with it try that on 26000 acres or so of water

notice i say relativly you are not fishing as you would on your local lake or river you need to be able to not only cover the area in front of you distance wise and fanning your rods you also have to take into account the depth the fish will be at if you have a hundred foot depth in frot of you its no use being at the hundred foot mark if the pike are feeding at say 70 feet on the white fish or fishing it a t 10 feet deep feor the same reasons

my last trip out resulted in me blanking not because there were no fish in front of me it was lifting the problem was id gone purely with big hefty bait rods certain the fish would be residing around a certain feature i got the feature right but the pike were chasing charr up the shelf and wouldnt touch static baits if only id had a lure rod which i usually do but for some reason id left it at home.

Does anyone know where the gentleman is whos started this and would any of you pikers local to him be willing to spend a day fishing to show him some basics if your near me (st helens, its between liverpool and manchester)

and you can make it ive no problem sorting a day out somewhere local if you are willing

and as for ullswater wow one of the hardest lakes to get a take in in the country due to the fact there are very few pike down to the lead levels from the mining in the area
