What do you do to stay fit?

Its interesting that nobody has mentioned "going to the Gym".

Following surgery last year I joined a local Fitness Centre, just to extend the physio and try to get in shape.

Very professional, allocated a "personal Trainer", worked out a programme (no weights), regularly monitored, etc., etc.,

Then started the most mind numbing experience I have ever had.

A couple of times a week for about an hour, I put my brain in neutral and did these exercise routines with discordant music as a background and TV's with dyslexic subtitles so far up the wall you could hardly see them.

I was in the company of other disillusioned individuals with a modicum of intelligence and one or two fully committed brain dead souls wired up to their ipods who were so "fit" they appeared to be on the verge of dying.

It was not a pleasant experience and I came to dread going.........................so I stopped.

Long walks with the hound and being careful not to overindulge on the scoff seems to be sufficient for me.

I walk to my swim, whether it be five yards or five miles. Not for exercise, just to get where I want to fish.

I see a lot of people "jogging" these days - most of them appear to be on the point of collapse.

You never see a jogger smiling, (unless that grimace is supposed to be one).

I've never jogged, (never found a place that I was in so much of a hurry to get to), and by the pained look on the joggers faces, I don't think I've missed out.

A few years ago I used to weight train, swim and power walk, but now I just walk, and concentrate on breathing in and out regularly, (it gets to be a habit after a while).

My walking has been curtailed due to a change in my medication, it caused my feet, ankles and then legs to swell to about twice their normal size. (I was hoping it would continue upwards for a bit, but no such luck  ).

I have been told to sit with my feet higher than my head for 3-4 times a day. It's not easy to type like that, I can tell you.

Another change in medication and the swelling is going down, (but not as fast as it came up <_< ), I can now see the shape of my feet, as opposed to having them both look the same :D .

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

If you saw me on Saturday why didn't you offer me a ride?!?! :D

Seriously, I can't help but think that some exercise is better than none at all. And I can honestly say I don't care to go to the gym to lift weights. I lost that mentality long ago. Besides having a membership makes you feel guilty for not going and I have enough guilt in my life without having that as well. Mind numbing maybe on a treadmill. I find that I watch the clock while on one and when outdoors I find it is much more enjoyable. The grin I can't explain. :)

John- What would cause your legs and feet to swell like that? I have a friend that takes 4-5 different meds and the main medication causes so many side effects that the others are used to counteract it.

A few years ago I used to......... power walk, but now I just walk,

What exactly is "power walking"? Is it walking a la Sybil Fawlty, or is it walking carrying a month's supply of groundbait (like army yomping in full kit)?

I've heard of executive birds "power dressing" - anything from wearing the trousers to donning jackboots. Glad I'm retired...

......and concentrate on breathing in and out regularly, (it gets to be a habit after a while).

That last exercise is life-saving though - keep it up
