do i need a bite alarm ?

a few times last year when fishing really far out with a feeder i seem to be getting less bite indication the further out i fish on the quiver tip

is there any tips on how to solve this because all the big fish seem to be in the deeper water further out and i would prefer to watch the rod tip than waiting for a buzzer to sound,

the lake bottom is very uneven, the lake is man made and can go from 3ft deep to 8ft deep in a matter of yards and i know it as lots of shelves and raised bars and is apparently 17ft deep at its deepest

so my line going over a raised underwater hill and back down the otherside is probably the main problem

any advice would be great

Would using a carp polaris float be an option ?

I've seem them used as bite indicators with feeders .

This float looks pretty gross but given the way you rig it, the slightest touch will cause it to dip. It is also self-setting when your rig reaches bottom and for uneven bottom, has the advantage of dropping your rig straight down so it is not lying over the dips and rises.

You won't see indication on the rod tip but you will see it on the float.

This is not some sort of take-the-stupid-anglers-money gadget but a proven float that has been around for a few years. I've been using them for for over 5 years myself.

Like the previous reply, I would probably opt for a polaris float in this situation but as an alternative, depending on how far out and how uneven the lake bed is you could try lifting the tip of your rod high - similar to beachcaster style, this will lift your line in the water and it will not be hugging the contours of the lake bed. If you're a really long way out or the lake bed is extremely uneven this may not work but I've used this technique in the lake district to help with bite indication and it has made a difference.

i am sure that a buzzer will not give you any better bite indication than a quiver tip. depending on your feeder weight i would try and use as light a quiver that you can get away with to try and notice shy bites.

take a look at my blog

i am using a quite heavy tip as the feeder i use is fairly heavy so i can wack it out further, using one with less weight doesnt get the distance and i thought a bite alarm might have more sensitivity,

i think the float method might be the best option cheers for all the help,

Mike, have you thought of using braid? I feeder fish quite a lot with 3lb TC rods and heavy running feeders. Mostly at 40yards upwards. I use alarms, but always watch the rod tips, and they show all the little twitches...............

Try setting the rods at a slight angle and use braid.

Hi Mike,

How far out?

That is very important the further out you are the more sensitive you have to be, hence poledark's comment about braid.

Your question is very broad and long.

Therefore a suggestion.

Where are you, can you meet up with another member, can this help with your requirements better.

If you are in Kent i would be happy to take you out for a day and try to help with your questions, this may not resolve the issues but i guarantee a great time.

What do you think if the float does not dip, try again I think.

The answer in short is no!

Feeder fishind at long range can be a bit tricky, use braid prestretched mono for your mainline, this will give you a better indication!

And use a knotless knot on your hook for a better chance of hooking your quarry!

Ime sure braid would help. If you are having problems with the line running over raised areas of lake bed try fishing with your tip(rod) raised like river anglers do. I do this on light wind days on my local lake to keep the line away from the many small boulders on the bottom.
