Having caught so many Carp you would have thought he would have learnt how to hold them.

No it isn't.

Yes, yes, catching loads of fish on crap gear is great and all that. This guy catches plenty of fish and wins competitions on his trusty old fibreglass rod, because he can. Skill with what you have is one thing. A whole day fishing with dated and heavy tackle, just because you're an old skinflint is something else.

I can see him now. Gloating, smugness all over his face as he lands another carp in his knotted weave landing net made from Spitfire parts.

I wonder how smug he is when has to carry all this extra weight back to his jobby brown Austin Princess.....

As an even older skinflint, who, on a given day might be fishing with carbon rods, glass rods, split-bamboo rods, greenheart rods, or even a homemade mountain-ash rod, I would say "each to his own"

Catching tons of carp seems repetitive and boring to me, but if that keeps the old boy happy, and mobile, then good luck to him, but as Poledark says, someone should show him how to hold 'em.

If anyone thinks a glass rod is "heavy" - then try fishing with a 12' greenheart fly-rod sometimes (I still do) - Heavy? are we men or mice? I sometimes use rods even older than me :o

The only concession to age I have so far is a trolley with big tyres which Norma bought for me on my 75th birthday. Very useful for getting a load of beach-fishing gear and a bagful of lead weights from car across half a mile of shingle, 'cos carrying it was beginning to make this old skinflint puff a bit. On the rivers I still travel light (one rod, landing net, small shoulder bag and an unhooking mat that doubles as a seat).

I have been promised a powered, custom-built, 4WD go-anywhere combined seat box and wheelchair for my 90th :)

And a Kelly Kettle Vagabond, you would not want to forget that.

Tell you what then Vagabond, you send me one of your Greeheart rods to try because I don't have several £100s or maybe several 1000 pounds to spend on Greeheart rods so that's an experiment I fear is beyond the reach of most anglers on limited means. Besides, how many angers actually own a Greeheart these days??

I'm taking about affordable fibreglass rods, not, antique, specialised and collectible pieces of angling history.

But yes, I'm sure they were lovely but most mere mortal anglers will never have to opportunity hold one, never mind use one.

i get you point but it didn't help now did it?

He's certainly not as smug as some of the guys on this forum who like sitting atop their moral highground like kings!

No wonder I hardly see any new members posting on here - it's like a private members only club sometimes, and heaven help anyone who should go against the grain.

Who cares whether the guy caught them on a £400 Carbotec rod or a piece of split cane and a bent pin, at least he seems to be enjoying himself despite his ailments. Surely that's all that matters?

I think Andy was just having a laugh and didn't mean any harm.

Clubbing together is like small fish that shoal, its just a sign of weakness.
