Chris, when you're fishing for big perch with lobs, how, how often, and how much do you feed? I'd be very interested in your reply :)

Nothing at all!!! Well no worms anyways - a sprinkling of red maggots is all I put in. Will keep the maggots going in on a little and often approach - VERY little if its a cold day on the canal! My mate Paul will often put in some chopped worm with some mashed bread soaked in worm extract - can't say I've noticed him doing any better than my approach! :D My 3lber on Saturday was caught without any pre-baiting at all - and in the first 5mins of fishing the swim.

That's interesting, and also what I do. On the waters I fish I find that loosefeed (especially chopped worm) just fills your swim up with crays. Maybe that can be a good thing sometimes, but it makes the fishing very frustrating. I have read articles where people fill their swim in with chopped worm, and have often wondered what effect that would have, but have never tried it.

I sometimes pull a worm into 3 bits and scatter that about a bit, but nothing more.

Do you also find that the first fish from a swim is often the biggest?

A lovely fish, Chris, and a solid foundation for the forthcoming Perch season.

We had a pretty similar experience on Sunday. Left the house at 4am to try a completely new venue out for specimen Perch potential. We really mean business this winter.

First fish of a fairly quiet day came in at exactly 3lb 4oz. What a scrap. Unfortunately, I lost a real screamer shortly before this fish, due to the hook turning back into the bait.

Can't wait to get back there. By Christ do the fish fight hard!

Sharkbyte cracking Perch and congrats to Mr Plumb also you have both put down a significant marker for the rest of us to try to equal ,They do put up a good account of themselves on balanced tackle but sadly most of my decent ones fell to Pike rods as accidental captures :wallbash: .

This rain should improve things on my local venues, just as well as they or more likely me have been dire so far Steve.

Inspired by the fantastic sight of Chris and Wayne's great big perch, I'm doing something tomorrow I've only ever done once before - getting up in the dark (5.30 to be exact :headhurt: ) so I can be quietly set up and settled into a swim for dawn. I kind of hope I blank so I can write it off as madness and go back to the civility of dusk :D

And a FANTASTIC little session it was too! Fished from 1st light (around 0645) till 0900. First cast produced a small pike.

2nd fish - and first perch of the morning was this fatty.....

All 3lb 11oz of it - a new PB

By 0730 I'd added another 3lber (3.03) a 2 and a 1½ chub. Bites defintely slowed as it got lighter - twas a cloudless sky - so a very bright morning - but still managed a couple more either side of 2lb!
