Lure fishing for Cats

Recommended Posts

I have never been catfish fishing but live close to a cat fish water, I have seen a lot of anglers fishing there, they all seem to use Hair rigged baits or Live baits. It got me wondering, does anyone ever use a Lure to catch cat fish, I have never seen it on any TV programs or in any book.

If live baits work then lures must!

Why does no one use Lures!!?

Just a thought

you can catch them on lures ,farnham AS has changed the rules that only single hook lures can be used in their lake containing cats as a result.

I read somewhere about them taking large soft plastic shads on the Ebro.

I'm no expert but they have poor eyesight which I suppose is the reason behind the preference for tethered baits.

I'm considering a trip to the Ebro in October, mainly for a family holiday but with the chance to do some fishing.

Sorry to hijack your thread but seeing as it's Cat related - I'm wondering if a 4.5lb T/C Spod Rod would be suitable for Catting on the Ebro. I don't really want to buy specialist tackle for something I'm unlikely to do very often!?

Lure fishing for cats is one of the most popular methods on the continent. Large spoons through to plastic shads are the norm.Ive caught them on surface lures and flies as well. Never tried back in the UK though.

Rob your spod rod would be ideal.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Thanks Budgie, I've got a Big Pit Reel loaded with 50lb Power Pro that I use for Piking - if I team that with a heavy mono leader will that do me as well?

I've got suitable hooks, hooklink material and rig bits.

For line Rob I would have to reccomend something a bit heavier (too small a diameter and you mnay have abbrassion problems). If you dont want to shell out to much get some 25lb Maxima Marine Green. Realatively cheap but really tough.Caught many trebles on it before switching to braid.

Kryston "Ton Up" or 45lb Quick Silver if you have it will do for hook length. If you are short of anything just let me know as theres loads of cat gear that now spends most of its "retirement" sat in the loft remembering better days!

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Lures - if the Wels respond like our channel cats do, a white body spinner bait is a good one to try.

I'd assume the same sort of fishing hours apply to lure fishing for as other methods?
