Ive just been reading an interesting article regarding the spread of "siluro" (catfish) in Catalan rivers.

The spokesman of one of the largest angling organisations has been complaining about the illegal introduction of catfish, into river systems in cataluñia.

 

He reminds anglers that the law states that catfish, as illegal introductions, have to be killed when captured, he is well aware that many anglers return them, and indeed that there are many companies bringing anglers to the area to fish for them.

He goes as far to suggest that it may be these fishing companies, that are behind the illegal transfer of young catfish to other water systems, he points out the current penalties for people caught transferring these fish, range from 200,000€....

up to 2 million euros...(yes 2 million!).

 

They have environmental studies, carried out, which demonstrate the damage caused by this fish to both birdlife and auctoctonous fish.(is that a spanish word? lol)

 

The catalan federation of sport fishers, sees it very difficult to erradicate these fish, but suggests an open season, with massive fishing effort, with all fish to be killed.

 

I know that, suprisingly perhaps, they are quite good to eat................

Nope - Greek origin - correct English spelling "autochthonous"

 

Means "Native, aboriginal, been here for yonks, etc"

 

 

Perhaps we should do the same for carp

I've only ever come across the word in the context of production - autochthonous production being biomass produced from photosynthesis of plants and algae in the water and allochthonous production being "stuff that fell in the water". A quick Google suggests that the only people who use the word are geologists and fisheries scientists!

 

Perhaps we should do the same for carp

Seems like a fair point with regard to introductions to virgin waters but fish kills are pointless where the invader is well established.

just as with pike and zander, attempts at culling will only throw the ecology out of balance and store up problems for the future. It should also be bourne in mind that culling catfish specifically would cause huge economic harm to the area because like it or not, a lot of people do travel specifically to fish for the big ones.

this is an important point before i go on these veiws only apply to open waters true enclosed fisheries are different

I think its just a natural progression (Even when it's not natural and the new species have been introduced). Things never stay the same and eventually one species will move in to oust the current inhabitants. It's just natural progression the stronger species will prosper at the expense of the less strong. If the native species can not adapt quick enough to cope with their new neighbours, so be it they will go in to decline and in to the pages of history

I am never to keen on the idea of culling one species to protect another. Should we cull Otters to protect native fish stocks? Should we cull dolphins to protect stocks of fish in the sea?

 

Humans are the most destructive species on the planet. Our expansion and spread across the world is to the detriment of nearly all other flora and fauna on the planet. Although cats and grass have done well from our expansion.

 

The theory of culling one species to protect another carried to its logical conclusion would suggest that we cull people to protect other species. So where should we start, who should go first and who should make the decision?

zander carp cats are no different from japanese knotweed,himalayan balsam, sycamore, rhodadendrons....

 

they all take up a place in the system that has been previously occupied by a native species, and from that native species other natives depend

 

ok take sycamore as an example it does support a large biomass of other species however they are a fraction in actual species types that something like a native oak would support

TRUE, but my point was more around not approving of the culling of one species to protect another.
