Need a new fishing rod/reel

Good morning all.

As I am starting to get very serious about angling, I wondered if anyone knew of any cheap rods or reels which are good for an amateur. I want a decent and strong rod for the least amount of money possible - I don't have much money right now cos of holidays lol. Preferably I want a rod that can be used for sea fishing aswell as primarily for coarse fishing, but I think that would push the price right up wouldn't it?

I need something that is excellent value for money. (the one I have right now is a tiny junior one so I need it about 12ft or something to help me gain back some respect, lmao.

Thanks for any suggestions. (cheap but cheerful).

Have a nice day all.

unfortunately "cheap" "decent" and usage everywhere rarely go hand in hand.

you can get cheap freshwater rods but not a lot can be used in the sea bar heavy carp rods in very light situations.

and carp rods are not easy to use for light float fishing

reels are even less suitable bar for heavy carp/pike use and the sea

so there you are more excuses to fill your bag with "stuff" :D

lol thanks for the reply. Can I narrow my question to cheap, decent and for coarse fishing only? I will save up for a seperate sea fishing rod.

The problem is... I want to try fly fishing someday too

Ive got 12 and 13' Matt Hayes TFG match rods for £25.Cheap but perfectly useable and look no different ie cork handles, screw reel fittings and lined rings complete with tube.

We need to convince Tesco Direct to take on fishing gear again, and sell it off stupidly cheap when the new catalogue is due out!

H/M The nearest thing to a universal rod is probably an 'Avon Rod', £30.00 or so off E.Bay. Some might argue that it is a good compromise rod but not particularly good at any one thing. Maybe some truth in that but you can catch a ten ounce or ten pound carp with one and it will do the job, which is what its all about! Okay for float fishing in your local harbour if mullet and bass rock your boat!
