Cooking Hemp

... And you dont get your ear bent by the other half.

I do mine on the side burner of the BBQ to avoid this problem but now this has sadly been put away for the winter, I can confirm Neutradol works well in removing the smell. Just get a cheapo saucepan from Wilkinsons - DON'T go using her finest copper-based ones!

As for the salt, some people add bicarb of soda as well. I think it makes the hemp blacker and some argue it reduces the cooking time.

IF you can put up with the smell, boiling your own hemp is FAR cheaper than Dynamite Baits stuff!

I still use the slow cooker method. I have 2 that the wife bought from car boots. They hold a pint of hemp and about a pint of water on top.

Its not critical how long you leave them. I put them on the night before and they are perfection the next morning.

Cheap and easy to do.

If for any reason my plans change I then freeze the hemp. I find having some in plastic containers frozen in the summer is brilliant as if I want to travel and fish I can put the frozen hemp in a cold box and do not need anything else to keep maggots cold.

My method for hemp is extremely specialised - I put some in a big saucepan with water and boil it until it splits :D

I've never felt the need to add anything, it's irresistable as it is. The smell of cooking hemp is one of the most evocative smells I know, it seems to sum up everything good about fishing :)

I know what you mean. The smell of hemp is one of those. But with me its sweetcorn.

I've been using Den's thermos method for the last 2 years. My mate Ken from the Bridgie Canal put me on to it after I showed him I was using liquidised bread / hemp mix when bagging up on roach last year.

When I mentioned the complaints from SWMBO about the stench, he said his Mrs told him how to do it!

This is a signature, there are many signatures like it but this one is mine

Another one for the pressure cooker, put in lots of water, a couple inches extra, boil it up to the right pressure, turn off the heat and let it carry on cooking, when the pressure has dropped open & check the hemp, mine is done but some stuff may need a bit longer, I think that it is the older stuff that can take longer.

All ive ever done is first soaked for 24hrs then either boiled in a pan and simmered or stuck in a m/wave bowl, covered and whacked on full for 10mins or so. Add a bit of flavour if you wish whilst soaking as well, fruity for summer, spicy for winter. Never had a problem, and i buy £1 bags of the cheapest from my local tackle shop. Easy smile.gif
