Here's a question that will split posters into two camps.

When is Britain going to look after its own and stop trying to still be a super power. We were a super power at one time but most of the commonwealth are now independent, and all we do is pump money at Africa at our expense.

If anyone cared to check you would see that the government spending budget for Africa is 7 TIMES the budget for the NHS!!

 

This country is like a swan - serene, powerful and beautiful above water, but paddling like h*ll underneath!

Do you have any figures to back up this claim?

NHS annual spend 2008/2009 98.6billion pounds

 

Projected donations to Africa per year 1.5 billion pounds

Actual donations to Africa per year 400 million pounds

Hi Kleinboet.

 

While I agree we should stop trying to be a super power and maybe accept a smaller role in the world. Your figures seem a little out. I am an accountant in the NHS and the figures I received this week state that we are spending £109.5bn on the NHS and the Department of International Development which cover aid etc had a budget of £5.2bn. I do not claim to be a very good accountant but even I can see that your maths does not add up.

 

To be honest in the scheme of things our foreign aid is peanuts to the amount of money the government wastes and what realy got me annoyed about the figures I was given this week was to see that the amount spent on Financial Stability (hands out to the banks) was £85.5bn and this is not the budget but actual spend so far this year. Who knows what the final figure will be?

 

 

When we give so little in aid, it seems wrong to moan about it. But I see your point it could be spent on making things better at home. However you need to strike a balance. Does it not give some comfort that because of the aid we give some one out in the world may have a slightly better life?

Do you realise how much anger takes off your life expectancy? Believe me, I'm an angry person too but trying my hardest to dump the anger about things you can do bugger all about...........its simply not worth it man!!! Wake up, smell the coffee and dump the angst.

Is the BNP website your source for this one? That's the only place I could see that's claiming that overseas aid spending is seven times anything. They're claiming that it's seven times the NHS deficit though, not the NHS budget.

How about the radical idea of increasing foreign aid by a massive amount? Chuck billions and billions at them.

 

We moan about immagration and the major cause of that is economics. You can not blame some one for wishing to better their own lives and the lives of their loved ones.It's up to our government to stop them coming.

 

If we poored billions more into under developed countries to improve the lives of their people, would they then be happier with their place in the world and not be so keen to leave home and move some place else?

 

The level of aid we give is just enough to make us feel good about ourseves, but in reality changes very little.

 

I think I need to go and lie down for a while, this idea goes against some of my more right of centre views. Oh my god I hope I am not turning in to a socialist :o

No. A lot of corrupt politicians, government officials and warlords might be very happy, though.
