Welcome to you.

Good angling forums are an amazing place to learn things about our sport you never knew. The range of folks who know bits is wide and when you put them together, you'll almost certainly find yourself a better angler.

I'd been fishing about 50 years when I joined several forums (including this one) and I still remember how little I knew about some things.

On the other hand, I am certain you know things that will be helpful to others and the give & take makes it all lots of fun.

Still unsure about how to reply to a post without bringing up the previous message or how to begin a fresh topic. However as you say the forum can be useful despite all the accumulated knowledge we each have. No point having it if you are not prepared to share it! I had also hoped to raise the queries about site usage via a pm but that appears to be out of bounds to me. Would be great if you can point me the right direction and then I can join in the fun

Sorry for the delay. We moved today from Alabama to Florida.

You clicked on the " Reply button which automatically includes the info in that post although you can remove what you wish. If you scroll down a little more, there are buttons for fast reply, add reply (has more available options) and New Topic.

I'd be useless at giving pike advice unless you like lure fishing and even then I wouldn't be much help since my only pike sessions were during a 2 week UK visit several years ago. I'm pretty good with largemouth bass & bluegills, a fair hand at catfish, and do pretty well with carp but I've mostly lived where the weather and water were too warm for pike.

Thanks for that Newt. Those buttons are quite plain to see now but I swear they were not available previously! It sounds as though fishing in general is quite good where you live though I am lucky enough to live within a short distance of the upper part of the River Medway here in the UK south east. It is very diverese and with some practice it is possible to catch most species including some fine barbel when the water temperature is high enough for them to feed. Once the temperature goes below around 5 degrees you can then enjoy lighter tackle in search of grayling. Fantastic if you like that kind of thing :)

The buttons are, unfortunately, far enough below the first set that many folks miss seeing them. You can make a settings change for yourself where a quick reply box automatically opens at the bottom of each page which makes things much easier.

Quick reply lacks some of the features but the box has a "more options" link that simply opens a full reply screen without losing what you have typed.

The area I live in has great fishing but very few species that bite reliably in cold weather. Pike, musky, pickerel (all similar species except for size with pike being the middle one), perch, trout and the others don't like the conditions down here. Blue catfish love it but they also like deep, clear lakes and there are none here. Channel & flathead catfish pretty much go to sleep for the winter when the water cools below 10° C. Bass, bluegill, & carp slow way down and of the southern fish, only crappie seem happy to eat well all winter.

Most of those species are new to me! We are quite lucky that the barbel feed right down to around 5 degrees but chub feed happily with snow on the ground as do the grayling so the only thing stopping you from fishing is the line freezing in the rod rings. Glycerine helps here but after a while the ice build up on the line gets too annoying to continue
