Lower Itchen Fishery Fish In

I managed half a dozen Roach from the slightly slower bit by the car park, best about 6oz. Lost a few others including a much better fish that might have been a Grayling or Chub - it wasn't on for long enough to have much of a guess as to species but didn't feel roachy. A really tough day, but as others have said good company and it was nice to catch up with folks, wouldn't have wanted to miss it and look forward to the next time. There was some talk of doing 2 LIF trips next winter rather than going back to Timsbury now the slow carrier's no longer included - I'd go for this, it would be nice to see how it fishes in October for a change.

So the AN fish in weather curse strikes again; perhaps we should get Chris Goddard/Sportsman to organise the autumn fish in in France and Captain Cojones to organise one in February in Valencia, may not be too many Grayling about though.

If anyone wants to arrange a LIF fish in instead of Timsbury feel free, I was wanting to hand on the baton anyway.

We've been extremely unlucky this season, even the Wingham fish-in coincided with a huge drop in temperature and heavy rain. Timsbury was a complete washout again, and then the Itchen was too. It's a shame, but as many people said yesterday, when you book these days months in advance there's nothing you can do except hope for the best! Other years we've been treated to perfect conditions and some fantastic and memorable days.

I have also given up on Timsbury, so a couple of trips to LIF sounds great. Having seen it on a good day, I can forgive it this grueller! Might be an idea to book up sooner rather than later, and Saturdays (or even Fridays) if possible. It does get fished a lot, and on Sundays (and especially Mondays!) there will have been people fishing it the previous day.

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

I agree - I always preferred Timsbury because of the variety of water and especially because the central covered seating area made it much more sociable, but now that the slow carrier and the seating area are gone it's spoilt it for me.

Well done to all that caught although obviously it was the taking part that counts the most! Would love to be involved in the next fish in. Certainly agree that 2 trips to the LI would be a good call.

The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope. ~John Buchan

Fundamentally fishing is a philosophy. A philosophy of earth, and growth, and quiet places. In it there is a rule of life, a recognition of permanences. It makes you notice the little things of nature, wherever you may be. ~Bernard Venables

It certainly was a grueller. After wandering around aimlessly trying to find some fishable water I ended back at the car park by the only decent looking bit. I managed a few grayling and a couple of little chub and roach but lost two very good fish and missed countless bites. I do consider myself very lucky, however, that I had bites to miss and hooked fish to be able to lose!

Just to add my comments to the catch return list - I blanked also. What a grueller. I had two bites whilst trotting maggot, one which was bumped, the other which was not. Both in the first half hour (I arrived at 10am).

I tried trotting, stretpegging and laying on, using either maggot or corn, in every swim with a bend, from the end of the trout stretch to the mill. When I got to the weir I discovered everyone else fishing the weir pool - obviously where everyone was catching!

I kept thinking about legering cheese paste, but with the Itchen in front of me, I just couldn't.

I think the fish were put them down by a combination of the amount of run-off entering the river, when it came down - 4 hours before light - and the temperature of the run-off and sleet - it was probably colder than that in the river itself. We were fishing a rising, colouring river which was getting colder. Never a good prospect.

Very nice fishery, a bad day to sample it! Still the comararderie was very good, particualrly with Statler and Waldorf (JV44 and Rusty). Thanks for the sausage bap.

Lots of wildlife also, notably the huge population of dabchicks. I can't recall when I saw so many.

What a bummer that the river was not in an ideal condition.

Just the opposite here, the Lugg is low, the clearest it's been since before christmas and I'm stuck in front of the computer working (mainly  ). It's also trying to snow. I'm hoping to get out on the river tomorrow as the fishing has been improving rapidly since it's been dropping and clearing.

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

I am so envious, that my response to that cannot be put into the written word!
