LOL - good stuff.

Yep

In five years travelling daily to school by train from 1945 to 1950, (Crowborough- Tunbridge Wells) and three years from 1954 to 1957 commuting daily from Crowborough to Brighton, on only ONE occasion did the trains fail.

That ONE occasion was included in the very bad winter of 1947

Leaves/ice/a little snow on the line? - Steam sanding gear

Lots of snow on the line ? - Small snowploughs

Horrendous amounts of snow on the line ? Large snowploughs.

I've also driven Bluebell locos through snow - great fun, unless travelling bunker-first in falling snow!

Thanks Chevin.

They interviewed Mark Allatt of the charity which built the train on the Today programme on Xmas Eve. he came over really well...droll, even to the point where he said, 'we had to offer the lift to people - it was a chance to sell a few souvenirs!'

This is a signature, there are many signatures like it but this one is mine

The pressure on the line under each driving wheel would probably melt or ignore any of the problems that the modern stuff falls victim to. The driving wheels nowadays, don't carry anywhere near as much as those big fellows did.

True enough Jim, but molten ice is still a good lubricant. The three solutions I gave were real answers to real problems.

Steam locos can slip their wheels to a standstill if not handled correctly.

Did steam locos have seperate pipes to feed steam and sand(dry) just in front of the driving wheels or were they combined?

Molten ice! Would that be water?
