The end of an era

My first 12 bore was a Thomas Wild hammer.

My uncle bought it new in about 1920.

30" steel barrels.

Half pistol grip.

Very light trigger, though!

Been looking for another for years!

Sounds very similar to mine Jim.

30" steel barrels fully nitro proofed

Half pistol grip

Chambered for 2 1/2" cartridge

If you like I will email some photos.

There are a few for sale on the web, usually c£500+, but the Americans put much higher prices on them.

Mine was heavy, weighing 7 1/4 lb. I haven't found one of that weight on the web. It might have had 3" chambers but was not nitro proofed.

email address in PM.

You might want to hang on to one of them though and use it sometim as a gift for a grandson or great grandson who shares your love of field sports.

Or even a girl/woman somewhere down the line, or maybe you know that in SM's family there are only males?

Women shoot too... ;)

I didn't know and should have included female persons. I gave one of my daughters a nice 28ga Remington auto a while back. Great bird gun and modified to fit a smallish person (I'd had it since I was a youngster).

When I first injured my back in 1987 I was advised by my surgeon to give up shooting as the recoil was damaging. (I was shooting about 200-300 cartridges a week at the clays)

Instead I bought a 20g Browning semi auto as it had next to no recoil. I loved that little gun and it was my favourite gun for shooting decoyed pigeons from a hide.

When I got back into competition shooting some years later I swapped it for a Shadow Indy 12G. skeet gun :)

Thanks Newt, I know what your saying.

The problem in gifting them to others is the amount of bureaucracy required for the recipient to get the appropriate permit.

I was not aware that you were required to register shotguns in the UK. Interesting.

I haven't hunted or shot skeet in years, myself. I still have my Ithaca Featherlight 16 ga. just in case, however. :)

Yep, a certificate is required to keep a shotgun. New guns, whether bought or received as presents have to be signed off the giver's certificate and signed on to the receiver's certificate and a record sent to the area firearms dept. at the police HQ. The idea being that movement of all legal guns is known.

The only real limit to the amount of guns you can own is the storage facilities. They have to be stored in 'suitable' cabinets fixed to your property. The police inspect these facilities prior to certificate renewal.

Firearms are another kettle of fish altogether!

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!
