Which Rod do you advise?

New member and I need advise please.

I am not sure of which rod I should purchase for my needs, and am looking for some learned opinions!

I live and fish in Ireland, where there are no barbel or chub, but would like an avon style rod.

I want the rod to be primarily used for (larger?) tench and commercial carp fisheries using an alarm indicator with the likely hood of most fish being under 10lbs, but I would also like the option of float or freeline fishing with it on these waters, and with the quiver option to be used for longer work with the method.

These will not be fast flowing rivers with snags, but mostly stillwaters, so am not sure which t/c will best suit my needs without under or over doing it.

I am choosing between Grey Barbel 1.5t/c, JW sig avon 1.25tc, and the fox options of Specialist 1lb t/c and 1.5lb t/c barbel.

I have never owned an avon rod, and already have a preston carbonactive 12ft feeder.

Are the quiver options of a 1.25 or 1.5 rod much stronger than I have with the carboactive feeder giving a greater scope for using a method feeder?

I am liking the sound of the greys prodigy best but am not sure if I am over doing it for my needs with 1.5t/c considering the waters I am fishing.

Which of these rods gives me the best range of options for my needs.

Also, if using a jw avon, when ledgering with a bite alarm would you use the it is 11 or 13.

What situations would dictate the 11 or 13 options?

Lot of questions and any help is greatly appreciated. :)

The John Wilson is a good all round rod I have used one for 2 years and have used it on the rivers and stillwater and carp to 12lb on 5lb reel line. That would be my choice.

You could also look at the Shimano range the Hyperloop and the Exage they would meet your needs as well.

To be honest rats you cant go far wrong with any avon rod,it just depends how much money you want to part with??!!,i have the JW which is a good all-round rod,but have other avon type rods ranging from 1lb tc to 1.75tc and prices from 30quid to 150quid, if you aint a tackle tart like me!!!! i"d go with the JW its bullet proof and you can pick em up for a good price...check ebay out they always have some in the auction.

ive been using the john wilson system for about 2 years now, great rod with lots of combinations, and would work well for you, they also do a barbel version, but all this is is a heavier versionso could be better for you, my only complaint about this rod, is the cork on the reel fix often splits if you over tighten it, but my mate plod has had one for longer than me and hasnt had this problem.

Smelly nets.

I have the Greys Prodigy specialist,it has two tops 1.25Tc & 1.75Tc & since you already own a feeder rod i would recomend this as it will handle just about any fish you want to catch aswell as having a life time warranty.

Rats dont be tempted to spend more money than you need. Go buy the John Wilson Avon and be pleasantly surprised.

£59.98 is the cheapest I've seen it at

My Hyperloop Barbel XT's cost about the same and you get 3 tips 1.75 test curve though.

Although I think this would be ideal for small water/ commercial carping.
