Which UK Freshwater Species would you get rid of?

Dales

Recommended Posts

Peoples favourite species have cropped up a few times in threads, which is your favourite, what would you fish for if you could only choose one species etc.

But if one had to go and you had the power and had to make the decision to remove ever single last fish of a certain species, which species would you swing the reaper at?

Oddly now I have asked the question, I am struggling to give my answer. Even though its a hypothetical question, I dont want to make the choice and remove a species from our waters.

I could go for Zander or Cats and make an argument that they are non natives, but I have just got into targeting this species and so for selfish reasons I would keep them.

So who then Pike, Perch & Carp are non starters as I love them :D

Rudd & Tench just look to good and so must stay.

Can't get rid of Roach that would be unpatriotic, but then again I don't fish for them much.

Eels to obvious and what would I use for Zander & Pike bait.

Bream, no still enjoy catching them to much.

So am I a bully, do I pick on the little guys. Dace, Ruff, Minnow, Gudgeon, Stickleback? Its tuff.

Sorry Sticklebacks its you :o I feel bad now they were the first fish I ever caught in jam jars and with those bright coloured nets.

So who would you swing the axe at?

Stephen

Simples .... carp! If I could push a button to get rid of the whole lot I'd seriously consider pressing it....

I thought of a few quick humorous responses to your answer mate, none of them are politically correct (no problem for me there) but my main worry, if you got rid of carp, would be the amount of white vans, bivvies and bleeping going on down by the river when I fancied a bit of a relaxed days fishing B)

not to mention the bloody great queue and the arguments over who got to press the button :D

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

I reckon the fish that would least bother the majority of anglers would be Catfish and/or sturgeon. Lets face it there arn't really that many waters containing them and not that many anglers who target them.

I can't understand people who dislike carp, I love em even though I rarley target them. They are also enjoyed by the majority of anglers so where the hate comes in beats me.

It's not a hatred of the fish for me, it's really a **** take of some of the anglers that target them.........I have seen unofficial introductions of them cause some serious damage to some really nice natural ponds though. All fish have their place....as long as it's the right one!

People don't like the way that vast numbers of small carp get shovelled into established waters, so that the only type of fishing is carp fishing. They also don't like the effect this has had on the angling public, who seem to think there are two ways of fishing - catching little carp from overstocked muddy puddles on pellets on the pole or catching big carp with boilies, bivvies and buzzers. There's nothing at all wrong with carp or carp fishing, just in the right place and the right amount.

I remember as a kid, the first time I saw a double figure carp I was creeping through the undergrowth and it was just there, looking straight at me like a still grey battleship. Took me a couple of seconds to focus and take in what it was, and I was amazed. Nowadays, that is nothing, kids start out catching carp like that instead of gudgeon and little perch and roach.
